I think there are companies buying cores from recycling yards. If they check good, then they are sent out. If they are bad, they fix them, then send them out.
Installed this in a 2011 Outback with a 2.5 (TR690). It fixed the issue. It wasn’t hard to install. Get a new filter/screen, you cant clean or re-use it. Some of filters come with a gasket rather than having to seal the pan with RTV. I liked this in case I had issues and had to open it again. It is essential to look at it during oil changes to make sure it isn’t leaking. Clean the magnet stuck to the inside of the pan which gathers metal particles. Valvoline makes a Subaru approved multi-vehicle transmission fluid which includes CVT II rating (and other Subaru ratings). The fluid came recommended by others including a shop.
CAUTION: The unit arrived a little dirty. This is a used and or fixed unit. There was pieces of paper towel that had caught sharp edges and gotten stuck in various places during repair or recycling. Clean off all the old fluid and debris with brake clean and inspect it carefully. Hand it at different angles and let it dry for a while to make sure all the brake clean is gone.
It is used. It will last an unknown period of time. It is easy to change. It comes with a 1 year warranty. It is a cheap option.
