My neighbor friend calls on me to fix things for her, and to keep her from getting ripped off by car shops and other contractors. She was recently told that her brake fluid was bad, and I had no way to prove or disprove the shop, so I ordered this.

I was surprised to find how inexpensive this potentially lifesaving tool is, as well as how easy it is to use. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it’s constantly trying to absorb moisture. When it reaches 3 or 4 percent, that’s enough to degrade the fluid to a dangerous level and cause your brakes not to work as well.

This comes with a manual, but I’ll spare you some reading. Pop the two included AA batteries in the back. Push the red button to turn it on. Push the F (function) button until your fluid is illuminated (check your owner’s manual or the top of the reservoir cap for Dot 3, 4, or 5.1 and choose that setting). Submerge the two metal probes into the master cylinder reservoir. The rest is automatic.

In a couple of seconds, you will see the percentage of moisture in your brake fluid and a clear indication of whether it’s good, or bad and needs changing.

The only thing this is missing is that it doesn’t test for copper, which is a fairly new ‘thing’ with brake fluid. In my mind, it’s not nearly as dangerous as water in your fluid, but it would be nice if this tested for it.

I prefer this model over the cheap-o pen models because this one –

+ has a gooseneck, making it easy to see when the two metal probes are submerged.
+ has a large, easy-to-read, fully lit LCD screen.
+ tells you the exact percentage of moisture instead of a tiny light.
+ lights up either green, yellow, or red to say good, caution, or bad fluid.
+ feels like a real test instrument, instead of a toy.
+ comes with a decent carrying case, although my zipper was/is messed up. (-1 star)
+ is about the price of lunch.

I feel much better about having this tool, and so far, it seems to be working flawlessly.

    I hope this helps.

    Ottimo tool.

In the interest of full disclosure, as a trusted and unbiased Amazon reviewer, I was able to request this product free of charge, except for having to pay tax on its fair market value.

Good product which works as advertised. I consider this to be cheap insurance. I’m a bit of a gear head and from what I understand brake fluid should be changed every 2 years regardless of mileage. This tool will let you know the status of your brake fluid by measuring moisture content and serves as an analytical method of determining if the fluid needs to be replaced.

There are a number of devices on the market like this one. I suspect they all use the same or very similar sensing technology. The difference is in the physical design, perhaps the durability of the sensing wand, and alert features. This one has both visual and audio alerts as well as a moisture percentage display. For audio, the beat frequency is different depending on the condition of the brake fluid and the display also changes colr to alert you appropriately. The flexible wand appears to be very sturdy and holds its position but is easy to bend.

This is a useful compact device which is very easy to use and has a clean physical design. It also includes a zippered storage case and 2 AAA batteries. I’m glad it is not rechargeable as eventually lithium batteries fail and then a device becomes a throw away.

Works great, need to let it set in fluid for a few seconds

A hand held brake fluid tester for Dot 3, Dot 4 and Dot 5.1 fluid testing.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time which if the moisture level gets too high can lead to to fluid boiling under hard braking and consequent brake fade.
Manufacturers recommend changing the fluid every couple of years to avoid this.
This tester allows you to check on the condition of your brake fluid and allow you to decide if a change is due.
Simple to use, the tester comes with a good instruction manual. It has a flexible stem with a probe on the end that is inserted into the fluid.
It includes a calibration check which involves pushing the probe onto the two test points on the top of the machine.
In addition; there is a light on the top of the tester so you can see where the probe is in the fluid. The tester will power off after a set time if not being used.
It comes with a padded zip storage bag and Duracell batteries.
I found it easy to use and a valuable tool to have in my workshop.
