I purchased these to replace the originals on my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. You will need to order 2 of them as them come in single packs. The fit and function are perfect and look exactly like the originals that you will be replacing. To install them you will need one person to hold up the hatch door and only remove one and replace at a time and then do the other side. Some of the reviewers mentioned it was easy to figure out and it is. In a nutshell, here is how to install them taking about 10-15 minutes total.
You will need a small flat bladed screwdriver and a 10mm socket and a friend to hold the hatch. Don’t use a prop to hold it open unless you are a thrill seeker.
1. Open the hatch and have your helper hold it all the way up.
2. Remove the top 2 bolts first using the 10 mm socket. This takes the tension off the bottom mount for the next step.
3. Use the small flat bladed screw driver and pop off the c clip at the bottom by inserting the screwdriver into the small opening in front of the c clip. The old strut will now pop right off the round ball mounting stud.
To reinstall, use the reverse order.
1. Install the bottom first by barely loosening the bottom c clip (don’t pop it all the way off) and then pop it right back on the round ball stud. You may want to put a dab of grease on the ball stud but that’s not required.
2. Now, install the top bolts that you removed before. Your helper will have to raise or slightly lower the hatch so that you can get the bolts back in. Snug them back down with the 10mm socket but don’t over do it.
3. Then repeat for the other side and you’re set.
These struts are really nice and very easy to install. You will save a significant amount of money by doing them yourself. The new struts will make a huge difference in both the opening and the closing of the hatch and will keep it firmly closed so it doesn’t rattle.

I’ve had to replace the liftgate supports on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee twice. The original equipment ones lasted 11 years. The Strongarm liftgate supports that I replaced the OEM supports with lasted 14 years and worked as well as the OEM ones. Because of the very reasonable price and the fact that they work as well as and last longer than the OEM supports, I highly recommend the Strongarm liftgate supports.

SOOOOO easy to replace your old worn lift supports. I waited like 3 or 4 years to replace mine. What a dope. These are so easy to install, just prop up your hatch hood, or have someone hold it up. not very hard to do and takes only a few minutes.. And I took off the bottoms at the ball socket first then removed the screws from the top bracket. Then just matched them up the same way and reversed the order. Moved the little clip out a bit with a sm. screwdriver and pushed the socket end onto the ball post and then replaced the top two screws with a ratchet and extension. Super easy. Instructions are fine but if you have a head for even minor mechanics you can just replace the old with the new without them. Real easy!
Smooth operation and nice rise….and it stays up unless you really pull it down…great!

I purchased THREE sets of these strongarms for THREE different Jeeps (’05 Grand, ’04 Grand and a ’99 Sport– all required different arms, but the drop menus are accurate)
Here is my review from my ’05 Jeep but all still applies to how pleased I am.
I was extremely cautious about purchasing something like this online… especially one that wasn’t Mopar. I called in to the parts department at our local dealership and just the parts for replacing the liftgate cylinder was over $36/per lift alone. I decided to ‘take a chance’ and order a pair of these off Amazon. They were delivered promptly as promised and in perfect condition.
For the past few years I have noticed the decline in performance with my liftgate’s ability to open the hatch all the way up, followed by having to hold the hatch up for 15 seconds to get it to remain open. Finally one night (3 days ago) after grocery shopping at night, I did my ‘normal’ hold the hatch open then load the cargo space. However simple that may seem, I was clunked in the head by the hatch a few seconds later with a very heavy hatch. Having to load a bunch of groceries with one hand in the middle of a dark parking lot made this issue a top priority to get fixed. My husband is one to quickly call the dealership to replace anything; however seeing as I am a stay-at-home-mom I’m not that quick to hand out 4 times as much for a very simple and mechanically basic fix.
With the assistance of my husband, to remove both and replace both liftgate cylinders took a matter of less than 15 minutes. The only ‘issue’ we had was finding the most compatible standard allen wrench/hex key. If you’re like me and want to get the project moving as soon as it’s delivered, I would find the appropriate wrench prior to delivery. It was difficult at some points to get the wrench in motion as they are compact and do not allow for much leverage. Another thing to consider is that they shouldn’t feel ‘impossible’ to screw in. If that happens, realign the screw and make sure the hatch is opened ALL THE WAY. One section of threads in my top left cylinder’s sheet metal was damaged when it was built, we sprayed on some standard grease to ease the situation.
Overall, this product is amazing! It was fabulous to see my liftgate working properly, saved money and felt accomplished by doing it ourselves. I recommend this product so much that I am going to order another pair for my husband’s Jeep tonight!
