I ordered this $10 set of two DIY 1-foot-long 14AWG Sparking SAE harnesses (Amazon ASIN B0DR7SBKZ8) because I’m putting together a 12VDC DIY solar water pump setup with a 12VDC MPPT charge controller, which has SAE connections (which are typical of 12VDC charge controllers).

In choosing this Sparking DIY SAE harness set, I had to run calculations that you’d have to also run to see if these 14AWG harnesses can handle the current. To calculate, I had to start with the fact that one of these foot-long SAE harnesses will connect to the 12Watt (nominal) solar panel, while the other foot-long SAE harness will connect to the 12VDC water fountain pump.

The solar panel will provide 1 Amp nominally, and the water pump will draw about the same 1 Amp nominally, but we need to build in a safety factor for the SAE connections. 14AWG wire is generally rated for 15-20 Amps in typical automotive or low-voltage DC applications, so we have a safe margin in these foot-long SAE harnesses. Even 16AWG would work, but 18AWG would be pushing it, especially if the length was longer than the one-foot that these cords are.

To calculate what the voltage drop will be across the Sparking harness, we start with the knowledge that 14AWG copper wire has a resistance of approximately 0.002525 ohms per foot, and we have a plus and a minus side, so that’s two feet for the voltage to drop, which, when you run the calculations, means there will be a voltage drop of 0.00505 Volts across each SAE harness. There will be an additional drop across the connectors, which if I equate to another foot, still means we’ll lose only about 0.01 Volts using these foot-long 14AWG SAE harnesses. On the other side of the equation, the heat will build up at around 15 or 20 amps, so for my DIY project, I’ll never get to that point – but for your project (especially if it’s automotive in nature), keep in mind the heat involved at that current (and where the voltage drop at 20 amps will be 1/10th of a volt).

As for the rest of the wires, these connectors come with end caps, which is a nice touch, where those end caps are secured quite nicely, for when they’re not connected. And they come with pre-tinned stripped ends of about 3mm long, which will be useful when connecting to the DC solar panel & DC pump connectors. There are no markings on the insulation but the Amazon listing claims they are “SPT-2 14AWG/2C” which means:

    SPT-2:
SPT stands for “Service Parallel Thermoplastic.” It’s a type of flat, parallel wire commonly used for household appliances and light-duty applications.

The “-2” signifies the thickness of the insulation. SPT-2 has thicker insulation than SPT-1, making it more suitable for applications where greater durability is needed, especially in colder environments.

    14AWG:
This refers to the American Wire Gauge (AWG). 14AWG indicates the size of the wire’s conductors. A 14AWG wire has a cross-sectional area of 2.08 mm² and a diameter of 0.064 inches (or about 1.628 mm).

    2C:
This means “2 Conductor.” It indicates that the cable contains two insulated wires running parallel to each other, one with red insulation, the other with black.

In addition, it’s a nice touch that the SAE harnesses each came with a polarity reverser, since they’re intended for DIY projects where the polarity of the load won’t be known by the manufacturer.

In explaining all of this, I hope this review helps you make a more informed decision.
