This module has the correct timing advance at the proper RPM. A little pricey for what it is but works fine

Perfect! 1999 VP 5.0 seems to run better (have more torque) than before. Engine would start one day, then not the other. Went through the cranking system and found the male prongs on the old unit corroded. This was plug and play!

Finally! After buying 5 … FIVE! … modules from different vendors on Amazon this is the one that works. All 5 vendors claimed that the part they sell (new) replaces Volvo Penta 3854003. I’ve been pulling my hair for several months now thinking that all 5 modules cannot be defective and there got to be something wrong with my setup. All 5 modules would work, i.e. the engine would run, however, they would not advance timing and the engine would not have power at WOT. I went as far as setting up a test bench driving modules with a signal generator and testing the output with oscilloscope. All it did was to confirm – yeap, all 5 modules do not advance timing. So, out of desperation, I decided to try another module. And bingo! it works! There was nothing wrong with my setup. My understanding of how these modules are supposed to work is correct. It’s just there are tons of vendors on Amazon selling cheap Chinese crap without even testing it. So, for all other vendors out there, this is what this module is supposed to do: 1. run the engine 2. keep dwell time relatively constant with increasing rpm 3. advance timing from (for V8) ~10@600rpm to ~22@2800rpm (plus base timing advance); with shunt connected to the 4-pin port the module should not advance timing at all. With 5 modules from other vendors I saw all sorts of different behavior: too long dwell time (leading to overheating problems), no timing advancement at all, too little advancement, erratic timing. Clearly, no one tested these and/or knew what they were supposed to do.

This item works with my carbureted 3.0 omc! I tried 5 other modules from Amazon that showed they were for 3.0 merc and omc and none would advance. This one did! Just put it on tonight so I can’t speak for longevity but I’m ecstatic that it advances like it is supposed to!

Didn’t work right out of the box. Cost me $250 for the shop to diagnose it. Bought a replacment at Oreilly for $40 and works fine. Sierra has a history of electronics not working. Don’t buy!!!

The part fix problem of poor acceleration. Included paste but no screws came with part.

It works, but not the best. The advance ramp is too steep, I guess I’m lucky it works with the 3.0 at low rpm and at high rpm. In between, under load the advance is too much and it backfires. Adjusted with timing light.. 12 deg at idle, when revved up moves to 26 deg as it should, but it ramps too fast. Finally got the time to test it on the water and it was disappointing. I wonder if all are like that or I got a dud?
Price is better than the dealer, so ðŸ‘

Works well , good price

The unit failed within two weeks, and they would not warranty the product.
Sierra products have never worked out well for me.

Sierra makes great parts and lifetime warranty. I had a timing issue, installed it and was back on the lake Sunday at half the price of Mercury parts!
