Seems well made, and the compact, folding characteristics are helpful. It does seem to help charge batteries, but at a very slow rate. Unfortunately, there are a few flaws that make this a bit challenging to use. First, there’s no way to know if it’s actually providing power without using a multimeter; there’s no charging LED indicator. Next, the cord is very short and can make it challenging to place the panels in a sunny area depending on where the battery is located; a longer cord, perhaps 6′, would be welcome. Finally, mounting options are limited. A longer cord would allow it to be placed inside the vehicle on the dashboard, but, as is, it has to be mounted outside, and it was challenging to keep it pointed at the sun, especially on a windy day; I resorted to using a windshield wiper to hold it down. Perhaps magnets on the back of the panels would help. Overall it’s a decent product with limiting flaws.

Basically this is what you need if you’re in a situation where you can’t bring a larger portable jump starter with you, or don’t have the budget to buy a nice one. And a nicer one we do have, from Schumacher no less. The Schumacher DSR Pro Series 12V 2400 Peak Amp Jump Starter. When I first got it, one of our friend’s vehicles would die EVERY time you killed the engine. And we were perplexed with why. Ultimately we ended up getting a new battery, but it also required an electrical fix to the Ford’s system. But what impressed me most was the fact that we got no less than 50 jumps from the DSR Pro on a SINGLE CHARGE. And that was without charging it first, like they recommend. That was using it straight out of the packaging. 50 different jump starts. Hands down, Schumacher makes the best jump starter out on the market today. Plus I’m already a big fan of their brand, especially all of their magnetic lighting for automotive repair (though I use the lights daily for any number of reasons on our land).
But with this trickle charger, it’s a sloooooow process. It does work. But it’s really one of those once-in-blue moon type products that you’d need if you were stranded somewhere. My experience with most solar chargers (for portable power stations) for different brands is that they just don’t charge things that fast. So I had realistic expectations about this one. Though I can see how it’s also useful just for keeping batteries maintained, if infrequent use is expected. Basically it’s better to have one of these and not need it, than need it and not have it. Either way, I still recommend the DSR Pro jump starter and power station made by the same manufacturer. I refuse to go into town, or drive anywhere really, without it.

Like the title says, this item is only for emergencies situations is not going to charge your car’s batteries or even your phone using the provided USB port, the amperage is very low for that (1Amp). The amperage of a decent car charger just to give you an idea is 2.1A, so as you might think, this solar charger is not going to make a difference.
I do believe that in case of emergencies situations, this charger will be a life saver, specially if you are camping or anywhere where there’s nobody around to ask for a jump. It will take a while to have the enough charge to start your car, I would give it about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending obviously of how sunny or overcast is on that day.
I noticed the cable that goes from the solar panels to the car batteries is very short, maybe 5 feet more of cable would have made a good difference, so in that case you have the room to number 1, place the panels outside of the hood and number 2, you have a way to maneuver and place the panels on the best position facing the sun.
I’m thinking that if the product provided a way to connect an extra cable for those situations where you need more cable it would be great, maybe some people don’t need that much cable depending on where is the battery located on their car, and then can use the existing configuration with the sort cables, just an idea.

Schumacher has been the biggest name in 12 volt electronics as long as I can remember. I have many Schumacher battery chargers of various types. You expect their stuff to work. Trouble free. Every time. This didn’t work. In the Florida sunshine. Multiple bright, sunny, 90 degree days in a row. I am not pleased.
