As others have stated, these worked perfectly on our 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. The suggestion I read in another review to use something or someone to keep the hatch door in a fully open position was important, as a lift support needing replacement is not going to be able to do this on its own. I used a reasonably strong pole to do this and it worked fine. One thing that would have improved the purchase experience is to offer the driver bit head that fits the support bolt as an add-on option. I ended up having to go to the hardware store to purchase a set of 7 bits, only because I didn’t have the one size that fit the old and new bolts. That’s not the fault of the lift support supplier, but Amazon might want to use data from the supplier to offer customers a means of purchasing what they’ll need in order to perform the installation. One other note is that Strongarm recommends that the supports be installed with the shaft side down to achieve the proper dampening and lubrication effects on the piston and shaft. My vehicle had them installed from the factory shaft side up which is what I mimicked. They seem to work well that way, too, but I may switch them around as recommended by Strongarm. I’m wondering now whether the shaft side up factory installation might have resulted in shortening the life of the original lift supports.

Excellent fit on my 2002 Chrysler T&C Limited. Just like the OEM – accept these are new and hold the lift-gate up! I used a broom handle to wedge each side up from bumper to outer end of gate to get them aligned. Just replace one side at a time. If old bolts are tight, spray them with a penetrating lubricant and tap the Torx bolt heads with a light hammer. I also applied some lithium grease to the new bolts. That will make it easier to remove next time, if there is a next time. These lifts are holding well in cold weather. So glad I did this. Took me twenty minutes to swap them out. No more bonking my head.

I just finished installing both struts on my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. It was actually much easier to do than I had expected. The struts work amazingly well…perfectly.

First Step: If you are doing this alone (as I did), make sure you very safely prop up the door before removing the old struts. I used a six foot later and then wedged a strong, stable box between the top of the ladder and the lift gate.

Second step: Make sure you have not only a Torx T40 bit or driver, but if you have a bit, make sure you have an actual ratchet and/or adapter so that the bit will indeed fit properly to the ratchet. A T40 bit will indeed fit into a simple socket driver (shaped like a screwdriver), but it is very doubtful that you will have enough torque to loosen the bolts without an actual ratchet.

Third step: The hard part/tricky part might be simply loosening the bolts without anything breaking or stripping (there are two struts and four bolts). So, before removing any bolt, I first loosened all four of them…just so I would know that I would have no problem getting any of them out. Be careful removing them….it takes quite a bit of torque, but do it slowly…just to get them started.

Fourth step: Once they were all “started”, I went back and removed both bolts for ONE side.

I read from several people about the new struts barely fitting (since they seemed to long for the installer)…ie, the lift gate wasn’t lifted high enough. I simply pushed up the lift gate absolutely as high as I could before wedging an additional box between my ladder and the lift gate to keep it raised up. This helped immensely. You can’t simply have the gate lifted to its natural position (at least on the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan)…you should lift it even an inch or two higher than it naturally wants to go.

I didn’t want to remove both struts and then forget which way the new ones would connect, so I removed one strut, and then replaced it. Once that was done, I replaced the second strut.

One major suggestion I can make: When connecting a new strut, first connect the LOWER bolt (the one that screws into the frame of the vehicle above the tail lights. The reason is because of the angle of the hole/female threads of the lower threaded hole and the fact that the hole is a little harder to get to. The first time I connected a strut, I connected the strut to the lift gate (door), and I simply couldn’t get the other bolt to thread in properly onto the frame of the van (because the angle was slightly off and the threads wouldn’t catch). I removed the bolt from the lift gate, and connected the other end first, and this helped immensely…the bolt went right in.

Oh, I just thought of something…I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan…that might make a difference…perhaps connecting the lower/frame bolt wouldn’t be ideal on another brand/model? I’m not sure, but something to keep in mind…use your common sense to determine which threaded hole is hardest to get to. Do that one first.

Note: As with almost any product that takes multiple bolts or screws, I recommend only screwing in the bolts “finger tight” or in this case “not too tight” with the ratchet until all bolts are connected…once they are all in, go back and snug them up.

I have a manual lift gate. The gate is NOT too hard to shut for me with the new struts (I’m a scrawny 45 year old male). Although, at 6′ 1″, it is much easier for me to reach up and hold to the outside frame of the gate to pull it down…I don’t use the handle…that is too awkward for me.

…and for the opening??? I *love* it…FINALLY, the lift gate pops up SO easily (and not too quickly), and is SO securely stays right up! Thank you for a wonderful product.

It took me 15 minutes to find the proper adapter from the T40 bit to my ratchet…it took me 5 minutes to find a properly-sized box for the top of my ladder…and it took me 15 or 20 minutes to replace both struts because I am not naturally good at this type of thing and I was being EXTRA careful with what I was doing so that I wouldn’t strip or break a bolt. If I did it again, I could replace two struts easily within 10 minutes.

I used these struts on a 2007 Chrysler town and country, the quality of the swiveling bolt was not the best.

I ended up stripping an end the first time, had to re-order and try again. Once I finally got through lining up the bolt and hole it worked. The struts are currently working, it has been about 3 weeks.

Bought this for our 2005 Chrysler Town and Country. As others have reported, the fit was perfect and it only took about 15 minutes to remove and replace both supports. The one thing you will definitely need is a “Torx T-40” bit to screw things in and out.

I used an impact driver to get the old ones out, and a regular cordless drill to install the new. I placed my 6–foot stepladder under the door as I worked, and had a second person hold the new lift arm as I went to screw it in, which made things much easier. Also found it easier to install the end onto the body of the van first, then install the ‘door” end second. This is definitely a “Do It Yourself” task, as long as you have the tools.
