It works and the car runs, but when it gets hot, like on a 90 degree day it seems to crap out and misfire/notfire. Install was easy enough and setting the air gap. There is an extra wire coming off the box that I think os for a tach. Didn’t neex it so i clipped it.

We purchased this kit to replace our Lean Burn Spark Control Computer. Unfortunately, it did not fit our 1986 Plymouth Caravelle/Gran Fury with a 318 engine. The distributor housing doesn’t meet the engine block and sticks out a 1/4 inch. After comparing the new distributor with the OEM one, we noticed the shaft of the distributor in this kit is 1/4 inch longer than our OEM distributor.
We had to machine the new shaft to make it work. Luckily we have the tools available to perform this machine work.

I liked the look of the distributor and the finish seemed great. I was excited to install it. However, when I installed it I thought it looked “off” just a bit from where the old points one came out, but I just thought maybe that’s the way the electronic ones are set.. It installed well, I hooked up all the wires completely updating my Dodge 413-1 industrial engine. the only problem was… I could not get it in time. I have been messing around with this for over two months. I went through all the electronic parts I replaced. I went back over the starter relay, the starter, the wiring for the ECU the resistor, the new Accel plug wires that I made… I was convinced one of them was fouling out and not letting the big engine run. I have been trying everything possible to get it in time, but the closest I got was when I pushed it to full advance (it wouldn’t turn any more because the vacuum advance was against the water pump). It started, but was running like crap. It needed to be advanced just a bit more, but it wouldn’t do it. I even called ProForm and talked to a guy in the “tech dept”… I asked him if the distributor was designed to work in a 413 industrial engine (it has timing gears not a chain) and he was dumbfounded. He had no answers for me, he didn’t know Chrysler/dodge made a 413 and didn’t know the difference in an auto 413 and an industrial 413. So, tonight I took the entire thing back out and I noticed that with the rotor in the number 1 plug position the ipsytiny marks on the reluctor were not lined up with the pick up. It was one spade off. So, with no way to adjust it without taking it apart I realized I was screwed. It would never be able to be timed in this condition. Since it took me so long to notice this I am past my 30 day return. I am going to have to eat the cost of this one. I had high hopes for this set up, but I should of know better. I am not sure I would try another ProForm product, I really liked the look of it, but I am leery of rolling the dice again.

With this kit costing only slightly more than a points to electronic conversion on your existing distributor, this is a far better and more reliable way to go. Keep in mind that if you aren’t all that handy with a wrench, it might be more than you want to tackle. You can go to the Proform website and download the instructions for the installation to decide for yourself. To have a garage mechanic do the swap for you, and do it right and tidy, count on paying for around two to three hours of shop time and thats if they even will allow you to bring in your own parts! Most don’t nowadays. Otherwise this is the way to go on older vehicles that still have the original and sometimes difficult to adjust points type distributor under the hood, as the coversions don’t address the fact that they will be installed into an old, and more than likely, original vintage distributor that very well could be on its last leg due to the bearings/bushings being worn out in the distributor shaft itself. This is a normal occurance and why distributors usually need replacing. The complete kit eliminates this as a potential problem, and that only adds to the priceless confidence you gain by eliminating the points alltogether. Oh yeah, it also looks just like the stock unit, and uses the same cap and rotor if I am not mistaken. You can also get creative in where you mount the control box so it doesn’t look like you have changed a thing for those that consider authenticity a high priority and want to maintain a stock appearance under the hood.
