I have a 1999 Runner Limited and was using Akebono pads with cross-drilled/slotted rotors in the OE size. I had recently replaced the brake booster, master cylinder, wheel cylinders and rear brake shoes. Prior to that, I replaced the rubber brake lines with Powerstop braided lines up front and a Sonoran Steel extended line for the rear.

I bought these on sale for under $500 which was a great deal considering it was a complete kit with rebuilt OE calipers. They fit like the factory brakes but I did have to trim the dust shield. I have 17″ wheels, so I didn’t have any clearance issues.

The only issue I had was getting the hard brake line attached to the caliper because I could not get the thread started. To make it easier, I disconnected the small hard brake line from the flexible brake line and connected to the caliper. Then I connected the flexible line to it.

I bleed the brakes, then drove around and engaged the ABS on gravel a few times, then bleed them again and adjusted the rear brakes. Then I engaged the ABS again and did a final bleed. Once I did that, the soft pedal feel was gone.

When cold, they are not great but once they are warmed up, there is a HUGE difference in stopping distance. (Edit) I have had a couple of close calls when the pads have been cold so I am going to be replacing them with either OE or Akebono.

One thing that I didn’t like is that the bleeder screws are 8mm instead of 10mm. But that is an easy fix, especially if you know ahead of time.

Perfect fit! After about 1000 miles on these rotors and pads so far, no issues, no warping, no noises, just stops my rig like it should. Didn’t care for the pad pins, they seemed to be slightly smaller diameter than the originals so I reused the old pins. Super easy to replace. Do it yourself and save a bundle with this kit.

Upgraded the callipers on my 2000 tundra. Bought this rotor and pad set at the same time. With a proper break in, it seems that they are breaking really nice and predictably and seem to handle high heat well. Hopefully this will end the warped rotor curse on my truck

  4. Amazon Customer

You cannot go wrong with these. Great instructions, terrific quality, nice safety upgrade for towing with my 2002 Toyota Sequoia. Unmatched quality IMHO.

2005 Toyota Tundra crew cab 4 x 4 front brake rotor & pads upgrade-
Performance wise, couldn’t ask for any better! Performs great!!

Think about how your project might end after you read what happened to me. I purchased the kit to do the “Tundra Brake Upgrade” to my 2000 Toyota 4Runner. It arrived on time, was packaged well and I was happy to receive it. I ordered the stainless steel lines as well. I went to a friends house who is an ASE mechanic to install the system. Everything was going well, no rusty caliper bolts, the brake lines came apart easily, it was a great morning. Only took us three hours to get both sides installed and we were ready to bleed the brakes. When we went to loosen the passenger side bleed port, it snapped off. As you can see from the photo, it appears that it was installed while the paint was wet, or it was cross threaded. Either way, I had a fully installed system that was now non-functional. None of the local machine shops would touch it because of the conical seating required for the calipers. After hours of calls, our only option was to purchase a local AutoZone remanufactured caliper and finish the install so we had a drivable vehicle. I probably should not have to mention it, but will, I now have a nice shiny red caliper on the drivers side, and a grey caliper on the passenger side. So, not real happy with the finished product, along with the extra cost and extra time.
Now with a drivable vehicle, I now faced the second problem of how to get the caliper fixed so I can have two shiny red ones as expected. Because it’s less than 30 days, Power Stop said I have to contact Amazon. When I contacted Amazon, they were helpful, but I only had one of two options: 1) they would give me a partial refund of $125 (which is about what I paid for the remanufactured AutoZone caliper, or 2) they would refund me the entire kit, I could take out the broken part and then return it all.
I took the partial refund and then called Power Stop to try and get the single caliper fixed. They don’t repair their calipers (that’s what they said), and since I had accepted the partial refund, they couldn’t honor the warranty regardless. Although, none of that makes any sense, it’s their policy. The lady who helped me was nice, and she didn’t write the policy, so no sense in arguing the lunacy of it with her. It’s just a shame companies aren’t allowed to do the right thing because they must follow a prescriptive policy. While I realize someone reading this may say it’s my fault as I should have opted for option 2. IMO: it makes absolutely no sense to ship out another 45 pound shipment, have it delivered, take out the one good caliper I need, then say it was broken upon delivery, and return the 45 pound shipment again. If it’s not disingenuous, it’s very unnecessary.
It may not happen to you. Knowing what I know now, I would have gone NAPA or OEM, or even local auto store sourced. Getting everything from Rock Auto would have also been a reasonable option. At least then, you have some recourse. In hindsight, the price is about the same, this kit just seemed easier. You always pay for what you get, sometimes you get what you pay for. It could be that my whole purpose is merely to serve as a warning to others. Hope it works better for you.

Noticeably better front end braking. Will replace the tears with this kit when done.

Hauled a 5000lb trailer in a 2006 sequoia on 35s and stopping power has increased by roughly 20% I’d imagine. Worth it in my opinion. Will see how long it lasts and holds up.

  8. Amazon Shopper

So far so good. I did a 13wl upgrade to my ‘01 4Runner 6 years ago with NAPA calipers and OEM pads and rotors. The left caliper started sticking so it was time to replace the calipers and pads. After reading all the reviews, I thought I’d give this a try. Just a few hundred miles and so far I can say that they’re working very well. Give it about 10 to 20,000 miles and we’ll see how they’re faring then.

  9. Moomanchoo

2005 Tundra (Gen 1), V8 4WD. I’ve had a couple brake jobs on this thing over the years, warped and turned rotors I think, three times? Replaces once, warped again. Then some remanufactured calipers decided to seize on me just out of warranty. I’d had enough, decided to overdo it a bit myself instead of another shop dice roll.

Best decision so far. The installation was straightforward, hadn’t done a brake job before, but internet videos exist in multitude, and I can be patient. Pads bedded in beautifully, zero squeaks. Excellent stopping power. Got through a winter with a few good snow days – The surface rust on the rotor is likely from the wheel. Salt, lots of salt. And probably half the 11k was on Dirt.

I don’t do tons of heavy hauling or trailer work, but the bits I did do went just great. All and all, it was worth the investment.

Have had on vehicle four months, performing just fine and no issues.
