So these units are nice, but in a Marine environment they need to be replaced every year as there is so much energy is this system that you will build up “Green Mountains” on the contacts in a short period of time. They aren’t cheap, and some folks hate the Hall Effect Ignition systems but I’m a fan.
My symptoms on a Crusader 454 was as follows: Port motor would start and run for exactly 30-40 minutes and then start to backfire and die out and NOT restart again until cold. I had the very best of mechanics scratching their heads because the contacts on the cap and rotor weren’t terrible. Enough to run or so they thought.
I clean the contacts and I got around 45 minutes of run time.
Remember this cap and rotor was under 2 years old so, yeah I should have replaced it, but thought it would at least run.
Replaced cap and rotor, and solved the “hot running” stalls…Never would have believed such a small amount of corrosion on contacts would do this.
Moral of the story is new cap and rotor every season moving forward. I wait for them to be on sale and go for it.

Pertronix as a whole runs nice. Don’t listen to all the negativity.
