Easy to use. Soaks in quickly and thoroughly. Makes the leather supple and moisturized. It worked wonders on my neglected Sperry Top Siders, a random pair of winter Ecco brand boots, my Zamberland leather backpacking boots and a very expensive pair of Fiorentini and Bakers. Only caveat is it will reduce shine on shiny or finished shine leathers and does darken existing colours. This doesn’t matter on black shoes but it is noticeable on brown leather. It isn’t a dramatic change and I really like how it looks and made the browns richer.

This review is for the 8oz. bottle of Obenauf’s Leather Oil. I had read all of the raving reviews and decided to try it myself. I purchased it for two leather bomber jackets. The product worked better than I imagined. The first jacket was a 20+ year old leather bomber jacket that was very dried out. The leather was stiff and very light in color due to age. I used about 1/4 of the bottle using the included applicator. The oil soaked in thoroughly and was dry to the touch in two days. Just for comparison, I originally did one sleeve with Obenauf’s and the other with Neatsfoot Oil. Both sleeves pretty much the same after a day or so. However, after a week, the Obenauf treated sleeve was noticeably softer and more pliable. I ended up doing the other sleeve and the entire jacket again with Obenauf’s. The result was dramatic. It was like getting a new jacket. The leather is much darker in color (I wanted that) and feel soft. It also repels water (in all fairness, any oil would cause that). So, I did my other bomber jacket. This one was a lot newer and really didn’t need that much work. I treated it the same as the other jacket, but this one did not absorb the oil. In fact, it pretty much stayed wet on the surface for a couple of days. I wiped it down and noticed that the jacked appeared slightly more pliable. It worked, just not as well on the newer jacket. For the price, the Obenauf’s Leather Oil is great deal. I highly recommend it for restoring and protecting a smooth leather jacket.

I believe in taking care of the things I own. This helps me do that. If you have leather boots/shoes it works great on them. I’ve used it family members purses and it makes them look great. Also works well on leather furniture. Don’t mind spending money on something that will make other things I own last longer.

I have tried, used and abused all the best water proofing methods and substances over a thirty year period throughout the brutal conditions that Scotland can generate. This oil is for new applications on to new leather and builds up the base. It’s counterpart Heavy Duty LP (8 Ounces) feeds and waterproofs the leather.
This combo has an endurance that none of the other well know brands have. It works. it’s good to see it available in Britain again, but should be cheaper. Good natural ingredients. It’s developed for Firefighters in the U.S. Wilds of Idaho in the U.S of A

I’m definitely was ignorant to leather care, and my expensive leather jacket became old looking, dried and greying. One treatment with this oil and my jacket was revived from the slight water damage over the years. It has a smell, but it isn’t offensive. Highly recommend if you have an old leather jacket you want to wear again

  7. LemurTech

My Wilson double-collar bomber jacket–a $25 find-of-the-decade from the local second-hand store–is like no other jacket I have ever worn. The dark brown leather is soft and supple, to be sure, but it’s the design that makes this jacket irreplaceable: the inner collar that zips up the neck; the double-button cuffs; the durable brass hardware; the ventilated back panel that is cool for late spring, summer evenings, and early fall; and the zip-in liner that has kept me warm for three Northwest winters. It would be heartbreaking to lose it or see it damaged in some way.

So after a few years of wear out in the elements, the rich brown was starting to fade and dry, and I knew I needed to do something. I tried a little Lexol on the back panel. Meh… Darker and more supple, but also a bit “muddy-looking”. Enter Obenauf’s Leather Oil. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I was a little terrified. I mean, I knew from all my reading that it would darken the leather, but I didn’t have much insight into the process.

I gently wiped the oil on, section by section, using the funny little sponge applicator attached to the lid. I spread and massaged the oil in with my bare hands. It wasn’t looking that great. I waited a day and decided that I might as well go for broke; perhaps another light coat would improve things. Afterwards, the jacket just seemed heavy and dark, with an almost oily matte sheen to it. Had I ruined it? Was this leather (calfskin, maybe?) too soft to be using this product? I nervously resolved to hang the jacket in a warm area of the house for a week; if it didn’t improve, I would attempt to machine-wash the ugly oil out using a technique I had found on YouTube.

But Lo! It *did* improve! After about five days the oily sheen had disappeared, and by the end of the week the leather began to look richer than ever before, and I felt like wearing it again. Over the next few weeks the color and texture only improved, and more than a month later it has come to look freakin’ AWESOME.

A month later, emboldened by my experience and now that the weather was turning cooler and wetter, I decided to add some rain-resistance with some Obenauf’s Heavy-Duty LP. I zapped the little container in the microwave for about 15 seconds to soften the wax, and using a hairdryer to warm the jacket, I applied the LP over a selection of panels. One coat, only. The leather darkened a little more. It and my hands smelled like honey. The next day, the surface of the leather had a slightly waxy but still supple feel to it. Water beaded nicely on the surface.

After all of this, I am totally sold on Obenauf’s.
