5/1/2029 update a picture is worth a thousand words so here is what I found when I took the starter apart, no idea if I can get it to work again

I DO leave the tractor outside, but it has a hood and in this area of Florida it has been so dry there have been burn bans for several of the months .On the outside the connections have literally rusted.Not corroded, good old fashion red brown rusted. It acts like it has a dead battery barely turns over, i charged the battery , nada , tried jump starting it with some serious thick cables, same thing.Tried jumping the starter solenoid to make sure its not my ignition switch, same thing. . Clean the battery posts, nope.Check the battery with a multimeter and i get almost 13 volts.Put the battery in a v8 Ford and it started it up strong…… so the starter is crap. I get that leaving a tractor outside is bad, but it is a tractor and is used outdoors with a hood so most of the rain will not get to it unless its blowing sideways. The starter i replaced was original and it sat outside for many YEARS before i bought it , so that starter lasted many YEARS, this one less than a year, not even 3 seasons.Ive started the thing only about 20 times at most so it cannot be worn out .For the 100 + dollars i paid i will take it apart and try and fix it , but i will tell you i would bathe this starter in some kind of grease if you want it to last if i can fix it i know i will.

My old starter was laboring a lot so after making sure the battery and connections were good I ordered a new Vertex starter. Although it is a direct replacement the specs said cw rotation. This got my curiosity up, so after installing it I leaned over to watch the direction of the fan blade as I cranked the engine the 1st time. It spun so fast I couldn’t tell which direction the engine was spinning! Obviously correct because it’s been in the tractor now over a month and working great. Can’t be more pleased.
