This product is amazing! It renews old faded-to-gray trim back to black and gives a fresh new look. It usually requires more than one application on badly faded trim, and needs to be reapplied again after a few months, but that is no big deal once you see the nice results that are obtained. I really like this product and would highly recommend it as a way to bring color and shine back to your trim.

Realmente restaura los plasitocs del coche dandole color y lusrtro a los plasticos sobre todo los negros. lo uso para plasticos y gomas del coche y no deja sensacion de algo grasiento.

First let me start by stating that I give my honest review. I am not compensated same.

I followed the directions. I first cleaned all my plastics with Mr. Clean, water & a sponge. After it dried, I applied Mother’s Back To Black with Mother’s applicator sponge which I bought separately in a two pack. All I can say is WOW!!! It turned out better then I anticipated. It took me a few hours. Anyone who owns a 2012 Nissan Xterra like me, knows how much plastic they have on them.

You do have to use a little elbow grease and work it in. Some of my 8 year plastics came up right away. The top of the back bumper and the oval door trims needed three coats (it went on easier after the first one). And between coats I buffed it with a microfiber cloth. Make sure you buff everything with a microfiber cloth after applying and it dries.

Everything turned out great. I even did the plastic braces for my top roof rails, faring on the roof, back of my mirrors & front grills. Wow!!!

Even though they said it is best if used on black trim, it still came up dark and awesome on my gray trim. Made it a nice darker gray, almost like when I purchased my truck years ago

On the photos you can see how sun beaten the piece on top of the back bumper, and the oval door moldings were. Night and day. I have never done anything with the plastics on the outside of my truck.

I did the whole outside and still have plenty of product left. It went a long ways.

The only downside so far, use extreme caution using on the plastic of your step rails (running boards) & the steps on the sides of the rear bumper. With any kind of humidity or moisture, they become EXTREMELY SLIPPERY!

A day later and still looks as good as first done. I don’t know how long it will last. But at least I have something on there now to protect with winter coming. If it lasts long or has any issues, I will update this review.

One coat makes a noticeable difference, but two coats is recommended. I’ve yet to have the chance to apply 2 consecutive coats. I live in FL so by the time i finish the first coat the car is too hot for a second. Easy to apply after a car wash. I used mother’s 2 pack round soft applicators for wax, polish etc. It rained about 3- 4 times before it noticeably started to wear off. With a decent at home detail job it makes the car look new. Its helpful to have a clean cloth to wipe off any excess you may get on your paint. Over all I’m happy with this product. Its easy to use and affordable.

Eventually automotive trim will begin to turn grey from UV and oxidation. This product is very easy to use. Apply using a damp sponge to all trim and the results are amazing, and last for weeks. Very easy to use and will not harm paint, so you don’t need to be careful when you apply. This is all I ever use anymore for plastic trim. Makes a 10-year-old vehicle looking like new.

  6. Cori

The photo shows how it’s looking after 1.5 months. I left a little section untreated so I could monitor how quickly it faded. It’s clearly still looking far better than it originally did. This is on my sun faded Jeep Wrangler plastics. Also did a bit of the steering wheel plastics inside the car. Plus the rubber stops on the bonnet. I will admit that I haven’t done a lot of driving because of lockdown, it’s winter, I’ve only cleaner the car once since and I store the car in a garage. Still, I think it’s better than I had expected from other reviews. Really easy and actually kind of fun to apply.

I used it to restore the finish on an antique car part. It won’t be exposed to the outdoors etc. so should last a long time. I wiped the piece down with acetone first then applied 2 coats of the Mothers Back to Black. Worked great. I’ve uploaded before and after pictures of it. Simple and quick with great results. I’m happy!!

  8. Jacqueline

Mothers did not get all my black plastic pieces black again. Sad to say but I was expecting more after seeing the TV ads that showed another product that you simply wiped on and made the plastic pieces gleam. But those ads can be deceptive and edited as well.

One piece that was a trim piece on my rear wiper was almost white and is now black but the black plastic, triangular trim pieces on the rear view side mirrors finally got black after FIVE applications of this. A little much I think…

The body of the side mirrors got glossy black with just one or two applications, which is nice and what I expected on the rest of the car.

The plastic piece between the windshield and the hood, which covers area and blocked off that hole, DID get black with just one application.

All in all, it did what it was supposed to but it not do it as I expected it or as fast as I expected it or as easy I expected it – but the end result is fairly good.

  9. Randy J.

Yep, it really does smell like bananas…but it does its job too! This works best on rough plastics. Worked great on the plastic trim pieces on the body of the car but it did not work on the seals around the side windows. Those were a different type of plastic (hard and smooth, as if it might have a clear coating on it or something). The un-coated plastic soaked up the Back-to-Black and instantly looked better. I continued to buff it into the plastic until it wouldn’t absorb any more. Then I let is set for several minutes before buffing off the excess with a clean rag.
Don’t worry if you get it on the paint. It won’t harm your paint and will wash right off even after it has set.
This product does leave a bit of a residue, which will attract dust but the problem seems to have gone away since I took the car through an automated car wash.

  10. B Wags

I have an older car with plastic side panels. Over the years the sun faded the black in the plastic. This Mother’s restorer restored the rich black color – and it’s durable. Didn’t even come out after several washes. I usually give it a touch-up every 9 months to a year. I park my car in the garage, so that helps too. I recommend this product for plastic side panels and bumpers. It even works on my plastic dashboard on the interior.
