I have used a plug in metrovac brand vacuum for decades for car detailing and other small cleanup tasks and have been very happy with the performance so when I saw this battery powered version I was excited to try it out.
When I opened the box I was immediately met with a strong foul chemical smell similar to when electronic components fail, I thought it must be defective but went ahead and plugged it in to charge and closely monitored it for any signs of smoke or excessive heat but it seems to be working as designed despite the terrible odor. After several weeks the smell is still quite noticeable and when used the exhaust air fills the area with the same burned out electronics smell which I really dont care for.
Moving on to the operation of the device I found the suction power is fairly weak except in the highest setting. The power button is placed in an inconvenient location behind the handle requiring a second hand to operate and every time it turns off and on it resets to the lowest setting instead of remembering the setting you were using before.
The attachments that come with it are very basic and just feel cheaply made, they don’t fit well onto the metal suction end so you either have to jam them on very hard which makes them difficult to quickly switch or put them on loosely and then they are wobbly and want to fall off.
The worst part of the design is the way the dust cap opens up so easily when the front of the unit is twisted, if you are not very careful when changing nozzles or even when using the device you are likely to have it open up and spill all the collected dust, a very frustrating experience that happened twice already. The dust cap should definitely have a positive locking mechanism so its not jsut a slight twist away from causing a major disaster.
The next issue is the battery life, on the highest setting, which for my purposes is mostly what I would use, the battery life is surprisingly short probably less than 5 minutes. The expensive unit only includes one battery and so I have not been able to find a listing for spare battery.
Overall this is overpriced and poorly designed, I would much rather use my Dewalt cordless shop vac or just drag out the corded version.
Outback Jack –
This cordless vacuum excels at quick cleanups in cars, garages, and homes. I really disliked pulling out the big noisy shop vac, fussing with the big hose and power cord, just to do a quick cleaning. I can finally save some space and get rid of the shop vac.
It’s durable, all-metal construction remains surprisingly lightweight. The handle is ergonomic, and the optional extension hose is easily managed with a shoulder strap. A clear display shows battery level, and the unit charges in 1.5-2 hours. Performance varies with suction settings. Key features include a washable filter and a HEPA filter, ideal for sensitive dust collection. While the shoulder strap and lack of a carrying bag are minor drawbacks, and the proprietary battery and premium price are considerations, the vacuum’s quality and potential longevity, as a USA-made product, make it a worthwhile investment.
DLG –
Metrovac has been around for a while and their products have always been known to be very good quality. I’ve had numerous metrovac blowers before because we used them in our IT company. This is the first cordless product from them that I have tried. I was a little hesitant because I was thinking there is only so much suction that could be made from something so small. I was extremely surprised when I turned the vac on. I had the wide “floor” nozzle on and pressed the vac up against my palm. The suction is incredible from something this size. I have other small cordless vacs and none of them come close to the power of this little vacuum. The body is all metal and you can replace the bag and hepa filter easily. For car detailing, I would go ahead and purchase the extra hose because the body of the vacuum is a little too long to fit into tight spaces in a car. The battery lasts a decent time considering how much power is being provided to the vac. I will end up purchasing another battery and the hose attachment. I use the vac all the time. We have hard floors, and it’s great for the quick little pickups that need done around the house. The front of the vac just twists off when you need to empty, etc. I do wish the bag was a little bit larger, but the size is understandable considering the overall vacuum size. This is a very good quality tiny vac. It could be great for metalworking, crafts, small messes, cleaning the couch, the bed, car interiors, door thresholds, windowsills and I’m sure many more places that a regular vacuum would be too cumbersome to use. The price may hold some people back but you’re getting a made in the US product and the company has produced many high-quality products. If the price is reasonable for you, I can highly recommend it.
SoFloGuy –
When I saw this vac from MetroVac it was a no brainer to try it out. I work for a large corporation and I’ve had a larger corded type for over 15 years which I don’t treat well but she keeps working. It’s all metal yet not heavy. You may think using it with the handle will be cumbersome but it is not. If you are using the extension hose it’s best to leave it on a surface or use the included strap to hang it on your shoulder like a handbag. To fully charge it took 1.5-2 hrs. Run time is dependent on suction level. In order to see the level it has a nice display, even the logo glows. The filter is cleanable and it does have a Hepa filter inter it which make this excellent for dusting collectables. The cons are strap could be better, no carrying bag, batteries are unique to this product and high price point. Despite these concerns you are buying a quality made in USA product. If this holds up as well as my larger vac it will be well worth the price.
