My mistake, I ordered this 1″ backing plate for my random orbital polishers. I have both RUPES and ADAMS professional polishers which use 5/16-24 threads. This Maxshine backing plate will only work with cutoff/grinders and large rotary polishers like my Dewalt DCM849B. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make sense to use such a small backing plate on a huge rotary polisher. Not only is it awkward to handle, but typically you want a random orbital polisher, which is less likely to leave swirl marks.

Despite claiming this plate fits 5/8” polishers, it does not fit my 5/8” rotary polisher. Waste of time for me.

If you don’t want to purchase a separate tool for the 1” pads this adapter will get you what you need. Just change out the backing pad and get to work on those small areas to complete the detail. An extension should be used to help you see better.

If you already have a rotary polisher with a 5/8” thread, this backing pad is a great little upgrade for precision detailing. I used it for hard-to-reach spots like around the gas cap, trunk seams, and emblems, and it worked exactly as I hoped. Threads on clean, feels solid, and holds 1″ pads firmly.
I’d recommend pairing it with an extension to improve visibility, but otherwise, it’s a super handy tool to have in your kit for those fine-detail jobs.

This is a sturdy little backing pad for use with an angle grinder.
It screws onto the shaft of the angle grinder on much the same way as a wire wheel cup would, screwed directly on, without the retaining nut-washer thing with holes in it that you’d use to secure grinding or cutting discs. It doesn’t come with any sandpaper or anything, but it has the hooks side of a hook-and-loop attachment method. I didn’t have one-inch sandpaper discs but I traced around this backer pad onto the backside of a hook-and-loop disc from another tool, and cut out a couple of circles too use for testing. This worked but isn’t ideal, and I’d recommend buying a pack of 1″ pre-cut sanding discs at the same time as this item, if you don’t have any yet either.
The first thing to note is that one inch diameter is small. Like, compared to a typical 4-inch or 4.5-inch angle grinder disc, it’s very small. This is fantastic for detail work, and gives you plenty of control provided you use a small enough and low-power enough angle grinder.
I tested it with a variable-speed angle grinder that goes faster when you squeeze the trigger harder, and slower when you put less squeeze, and it worked nicely. I would not recommend using a “full speed or nothing” grinder because you’re gonna want less RPMs than that so you don’t either burn up or centripetal/centrifugal whoosh the sandpaper off. It’s one of those “more is not better” things because of the scale.
That said, I absolutely love it. There are more small things to sand or buff or polish, that I just could not reach before, than I was consciously aware of. Even my make-do improvised sanding discs were enough to remove the oxidized yellowed old varnish from a few outdoor plastic items, and to remove rust and corrosion from a narrow gap that no full-size disc could ever get into, and before I stopped myself I was already scrubbing a burnt mark off an old patio table. It’s kinda like a pressure washer, “what can I clean up next, while I have the tool out?”
As of this writing, both the one-inch and the two-inch sizes of this item are asking price $10 each. I can’t tell if that’s a good price or not: my frame of reference of what a dollar is worth is busted these days. But I can say that if you need something to do what this thing does, this particular make is Good, and for the time and effort saved and the results you can get with it, it wouldn’t take long for it to pay for itself (albeit qualitatively.)

This is great for detailing small or hard to get to spots, wheels etc.
Comically small on a polisher, I find this is best used on a drill with suitable adapter.
Build quality seems good and I have no reason to believe this will not last a long time.
I’ve knocked one star off for price – @$10 it’s a little expensive, but I’m not seeing many alternatives.

Have several flex polishers and more than a few others brands all use standard 5/8 thread. This fits them and extensions fine. Seems like it would hold up to a rotary at reasonable rpm fine, i started using it already for tight spots around gas fills, hatch edges, non skid borders on my project boat already.

Easy to install to any 5/8″ angle grinder or polisher. Has a foam pad to keep from burning paint or gouging anything. Hook and loop pad to install you sandpaper or pad to. Works great so you don’t need to have another tool just for this one purpose.
