I decided to do some pretty extensive research on oil filters. I have gone back to changing my own oil in my vehicles for various reasons and noticed that filters seemed pretty flimsy since I had last purchased them.
I looked online, read many reviews, watched many videos of filters being cut open so I could see the design and how they were intended to function. I was surprised at how some filters are so poorly constructed. Most of the filters I would not even use on a lawn mower.
Anyways my decision ended up being MAHLE Original for so many reasons. Yes there are some others available that are very well constructed as well, but are also way more expensive.
-The metal canister that houses the filter unit is a very heavy gauge metal.
-The filters check valve that prevents oil from draining out of the engine when shut off to prevent a dry start is well designed and assures that the engine is going to have the best possible lubrication when you start it.
-In the bottom of the filter canister there is a heavy duty coil spring that applies tension to the filter element keeping the filter in the proper position to filter the oil whether it is cold or hot vs some of the less expensive torsion type springs trying to accomplish the same task.
-There is an embossed pleated filter that has numerous pleats that are evenly spaced. It looks like someone broke out a ruler and measured each one. The more pleats equals more surface area to trap dirt. MAHLE filters have a lot of pleats. The more even they are the more even the oil is going to be distributed through the filter, and not only travel through the one area that is wide open because the pleats are not evenly spaced and it has the least resistance of flow.
-The pleats of the filter are also held in place with metal end caps and a very high quality glue vs some of the cardboard end caps out there.
-There is also a very nice check valve/by-pass valve on the bottom end cap on the inside of the filter. It has an elastomer seal to prevent dirty oil from entering the clean side of the filter but if the oil is thick due to being very cold or extremely dirty due to lack of oil changes it will open to allow the oil to by-pass the filter and go straight through to the engine to provide lubrication.
-Inside the filter element itself there is also a metal tube that prevents the filter from collapsing on itself. This would help since the oil filter is exposed to high amounts of pressure at various temperatures.
SUMMARY:
I own this Chevrolet along with a Ford vehicle. There was a time when I would not of thought twice about going down to purchase an AC Delco filter. The AC Delco filter is not what it used to be. I am not saying they are a horrible filter. I just believe in MY OPINION that this filter is far superior.
There are some other brands that I used in confidence at one time. Once I researched them like I mentioned earlier, I might use them on a lawn mower because they are not very effective in my opinion and poorly constructed. The boxes are pretty and the marketing is fantastic but that is all they have going for them.

I received this filter in a basic white box, not the usual blue Mahle box. It did not have the authentication QR code. So, I sent photos to Mahle’s integrity division and they agree it is not one of theirs. So, buyer beware…

Filter was delivered with a plastic seal. When I tried to thread it on, it would not go. Confirmed the threads on the filter were damaged. Threw it in the garbage and replaced with a NAPA Gold which screwed onto the car no problem.
Seems like a QC issue with these perhaps? Maybe I got a lemon.

*Update: Ran two of these MAHLE filters back to back and noticed drop in Oil Pressure. Switched to OEM (ACDelco) filter, and Oil Press is back within spec.
I’d stick with OEM.
