I’ve never replaced a starter before, but this was a simple task with my Husqvqrna Z254 with a Kohler 7000 Series engine. Out with the old; in with the new. I was a little concerned because the cogs on the starter didn’t line up with the cogs on the fly-wheel, but then I realized when the starter gets power the shaft with the cogs rise up to the fly-wheel. Tada!!!! Works like a charm. Saved lots of $$$ doing it myself — and it was easy. With a 1-year warranty, even if it goes out in 13 month, its still work the cost and gaining of experience.

Item fit and functions as an original OEM part on a Husqvarna RZ5425 zero turn mower. The starter was priced very affordable for the great quantity. The item was delivered new in the box professionally backed with no blemishes.

I installed this on our Kohler courage twin SV715. It fit perfectly, the quality was excellent and works as well as the original. Great value for the money.

To start with, I had originally planned to return this starter motor; I’ll tell you why in a moment. But I hate returning things back to Amazon, unless I’m certain that the product is not what I need. It would not be fair for Amazon to pay return shipping charges, unless it is absolutely unavoidable.

So first, let me tell you something about these motors. They have the typical pair of long holes for running the pair of mounting bolts through. But you need to notice that one hole is small and circular, and the other hole will be larger and elongated. The first, smaller hole, is the one you want to start with when mounting a starter motor on. Since that hole is a tighter fit to the bolt, it will help you to better align the motor to where the cog needs to engage teeth on the flywheel. Before you tighten this bolt down, install the second bold into the elongated hole. Screw them both in almost all the way, but not tight. Then fully tighten the first bolt, followed by the second bolt. Next, manual spin the cog up until it engages with the flywheel’s teeth. It should be fairly easy to do, if not, remove the motor and try again.

Now here’s why I almost returned the motor: The first circular hole was appreciably larger than the OEM starter motor. This equates to a lot of slop around the first mounting bolt. What this means is, it would be VERY difficult to get the starter motor precisely where it needs to be. Bottom line: there was just too much slop between both mounting holes. But wait, there’s more to this story that you will want to know!

At this point, I had already made arrangements to return it… but then it occurred to me that I could use a trick that I’ve used to install clutch packs on cars. So, I took the first bolt and carefully wrapped painters’ tape around it to get it to just barely fit the first circular hole. I started with 10 wraps around it, and carefully remove one layer at a time. When I got to the 7th layer, it fit almost perfectly. This allowed the bolt and the starter motor to line right up to where they needed to be. Afterwards, I installed the second bolt and checked to see that it was level. And that solved the problem, entirely.

So, why did they make that first hole too large? I suspect the reason may be so that it could fit more than just my specific Kohler engine. But who knows? Anyhow, with very little effort on my part, I was able to mount the motor with no remaining issues.

Next thing you need to know. This motor is noticeably longer than the OEM motor. I wondered if this would translate to an improvement or not. I suspect the answer is yes, because it appears to have more power than the original motor ever had. No joke, this starts my ZTR up VERY fast. In fact, I think my ZTR is afraid of it, because if I just wave the key at the mower, it will crank up! Okay, that’s a pitiful daddy-level joke, but it does start up much better, much faster… and right now I’m thoroughly impressed. By the way, the other reviewers seem to really like it … which is why I purchased it. I found less expensive motors, but not with this same level of 4 and 5 star reviews.

Like I said, I had planned to return it… and probably give it only 2 or 3 stars… but the painters’ tape resolved that issue… which made it no big deal at all. Therefore, instead of a few stars, I gave it 5 stars. So, what is important is the answer to these questions:
Can it be correctly fitted to my Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1’s 24HP Kohler engine?
Can it perform as well, or better than the OEM part?
Would I purchase it again, if I had the opportunity?
And the answer to all of these questions is a solid YES.

I hope this information overload is able to help you make the right decision!
And thank you for reading my review!
