The filter we had on the Malibu was mostly a plastic panel with a small rectangular section of filter in the middle. This small section of filter sat on top of a plastic feature inside the air box, further restricting airflow. This K&N filter is all filter for the entire surface area of the filter. For turbo cars, airflow makes a big difference, and we were experiencing some definite performance issues, as well as an A/C issue where it never cooled well. Once I installed this filter, the A/C was noticeably cooler, as the motor could now easily rev as needed to keep the compressor running, and power the car forward. I believe any paper filter that covers the whole area of this filter size would be almost as good. But, it’s hard to go wrong with a K&N filter. I’ve never had the oiled MAF issues everybody always warns about.

2017 Chevy Malibu 1.5L works great! After getting this, changing spark plugs and putting an after market oil catch can on at 123k miles my fuel mileage went from 290 a tank to 335 a tank.

Always have ran K&N filters in all my vehicles and they have increased performance in the vehicle and the ease of maintenance. Fit perfectly on my 2021 Chevy Malibu LT. Best bang for the buck without going the cold air intake route.
