Update: After 5,000 miles the transmission is still not shifting right, and fuel consumption skyrockets on any acceleration. Mileage has dropped to 18.5 – 19 mpg. Going back to paper filter to see if it fixes problem. Will update when know result.
update2: After 4000 miles on a WIX filter the shifting has restabilized and mileage is almost back to normal. Very counter intuitive that more air flow would cause problems, but I am one of those people who choose to believe the data instead of what I want to believe. You can see from my original comments below that I WANTED to believe this filter would be better.
Ok, first thing is first. There are a LOT of (really) clueless people making claims about this filter. The dumbest ones make strong statements and have no actual factual data to back it up.
FACT: You will NOT damage your MAF sensor in any way with filter oil if you follow the directions
FACT: The filter does not have to perfectly match your old one’;s height. As long as the cover presses into the opening when you put the cover on, you are good.
FACT: with modern cars you can NOT just test the old filter, swap in the new one, and run the test again. The engine control module “learns” about your diving habits over time, and changing to this filter from a paper one will cause the modules to adjust over time.
After realizing most of the people (especially on youtube) were talking out of their anus, I did some REAL research. Very fascinating and I recommend you do it too if you are considering one of these. I replaced a fairly clean OEM paper filter with this.
Replacing the filter was easy, and made some huge changes to the engine characteristics of my Ram Promaster 2500 cargo van. In particular the transmission has been having to relearn where to shift. My first tank was 18 mpg, compared to a 20.4 average for the last 20+ tanks. The second tank was 19.2 mpg. The third was 19.8. The fourth is looking like 20.4 mpg. The transmission is still having occasional issues but has pretty much stabilized. This means for me the new filter will get at least as good a mileage as the old one. My best guess is that I will end up around 21 mpg. A 0.6 mpg increase doesn’t sound like much but it’s a significant 3% improvement.
One other thing I have noticed is that when I have to do the occasional stomping on the gas, the engine winds up MUCH faster, and to a higher RPM. This suggests that the ping pong video on YouTube is actually real, and this filter flows a LOT more air than the paper ones.

I’ve been anxiously waiting for K&N to make the air filter for the Ram Promaster. Well worth the wait. My van has a little more pep and torque too. Sounds great and even gained 1-2 mpg.

This was installed in a 2021 Promaster 2500. I was surprised by the struggle to get at the old filter as the screws were hard to get at. The end of the new KN unit was unlike the original and just didn’t seem right. The original had small bumps on the end that made it sit well. The KN unit was flat on the bottom, so it didn’t sit welland rocked. It seemed to sit okay once all of the screws were tight, but I can’t tell for sure. It makes me worry if dirty air will get past the filter. No observable change in noise, power or mileage.
