These coils get the job done with no fuss. Fit and function is spot on, and they are virtually indistinguishable from factory coils when placed side by side. The price is so low that I recommend buying this set of four and replacing all four, even if you only have one coil showing misfire. Your OEM coils all the same age, they’ll all go bad eventually. Just replace all four at once.
These four come complete, ready to install – no extra boots needed.
NOTES:
I recommend coating the sealing surface with a light coat of silicone dielectric grease, available on Amazon. This will make them easier to remove sometime in the future, should the need arise.
I recommend replacing the spark plugs at the same time. The entire job can be accomplished with a few basic hand tools, but do use a torque wrench when installing your plugs.
Get these coils – solve your VW Passat 1.8 and similar vehicles’ misfire woes. You can go from bummed to done in less than two hours if you have any mechanical aptitude whatsoever. At this price, it is a simple and affordable job to replace your coils.
OTHER NOTES TO HELP YOU
Engine cover on a Passat simply pulls off with two handed grip…no nuts or screws holding it.
Coils are retained by double 10mm nuts, one stud per coil. Light torque on these. You’re not holding on a connecting rod cap here… 🙂
Replace your plugs while you’re in there. I recommend NGK or Bosch spark plugs.
OEM gap is generally .28, but do your research.
Basic Platinum plugs are fine. You don’t have a race car. 🙂
Spark plug is a 5/8 socket. You WILL need a true spark plug socket (the one with the with rubber interior plug gripping accessory) in order to get the plugs in and out. The plug wells are very narrow and deep
Make sure your extension bar has a positive lock to retain the socket on the extension! Otherwise, your socket will get stranded down in the plug well when you try to remove it after torquing the plug – staying stuck to the plug. Use a positive lock extension bar, or tape your socket onto the extension using one layer of metal foil tape. (VERY THIN TAPE) There is no room for a big fat wrapping of tape.
OEM plug torque is 22-25 NM. Get it right. Use a torque wrench.
When torquing new plugs, remember they have a crush washer which must first crush before you hit true torque. This sealing washer crushing action MUST be accomplished before you are finished torquing the plug. Note that it may take almost 1/4 turn to fully crush a spark plug crush washer. THEN you hit torque…not the other way around. Don’t miss this action. It is a common error for people with no experience putting in new spark plugs. Likewise, don’t strip the aluminum threads of your spark plug hole by going ham-handed on it. Use a torque wrench set to the correct value. It is the only way for a weekend warrior to get the crush and get the plug seal right. You just don’t change enough plugs to feel it. Why risk it?
