Subaru OEM fluid without dealership markup.

This is the exact product called for in the factory service manual. Somehow, it was more economical than the off the shelf stuff in the stores.
Worked perfectly and the car has never run better. No more burning smell, smoother shifts. Performance is what it’s supposed to be.

TL;DR: works just as intended and IS the manufacturer of the Subaru HP variant. Idemitsu HP is the same. Its what Subaru recommends over Dexron since 2006 for these transmissions.

To give a little background: My center lockup clutches (MPT if you know) were binding in turns which often happens in automatic Subarus when the oil gets old or dirty. It feels like a shutter when you make tight turns, and you can hear the tires binding up. Its 50/50 that or Duty C solenoid went bad. Need to fix it or risk burning the MPT clutch pack. One of the first things that should be done, even if the oil is dark, is to give it a change. The oil pan holds 5 quarts, the transmission itself holds a total of about 15.

Subaru service bulletins state( in 2006) that after ’06 they do not recommend Dexron, they recommend Subaru ATF-HP. This is that very same HP formula. Idemitsu makes the blue Subaru bottles of the same stuff but at about half the cost that Subaru sells their blue bottles at.

Well, one change is all it took. One change and the MPT broke free within the first tight turn. The transmission never shifted or felt better. No more hard shifts, no more shift hesitation. No more solenoid buzz. no more ” idk which gear to choose” syndrome. I will change it 2 more times after periods of about 500 miles to get all of the fluid new, just as many in the community recommends.

If you see glitter in your old oil, time to get it rebuilt. I did not and its the only reason why i changed it even though it was dark and didn’t re-add some of the old oil back( often done because that glitter is usually clutch material and without it, you will slip gears). No clutch material from any of the MPT or drive gear clutch packs in the oil and no broken teeth in the gears. If this oil change doesn’t help with MPT bind, could be your Duty C solenoid but that usually throws a code and makes your ATF TEMP light blink 16 times when you start the car.

If its Duty C, you will need more of these as you have to drop the pan and do a little work.

I bought this in late 2023 for a 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6r with the 5 speed automatic 5EAT transmission. This is the manufacturers recommended OEM fluid.

Nobody local had this stuff for less than $12/qt. This came out to be a little under $8/qt to my door. Can’t do much better for OEM.

  5. Laura Jablonski

Product arrived prompt. Works well to replace transmission fluid

I love this stuff, I should of bought this stuff sooner vs buying what was at Autozone. I bought STP brand and it didn’t work very well.
Once I swapped it out for this, it runs VERY good. Feels like it should of done!

I have a Subaru 1998 Legacy Outback with the Phase 1 4EAT Transmission and this fixed my slipping and poor shifting Transmission issue almost instantly. I mean, it was so bad it was slipping while climbing up a hill. This fluid doesn’t do that at all, it feels like factory new and it shifts smoothly.

If you need fluid and have to flush it out. PLEASE, buy this fluid. It works, and it will do the job properly.

My preference is to stick with what the manufacture recommends in putting into my Subaru. Although there are universal ATF out there that states that it meets ATF Type HP specs, I feel more comfortable in using what the factory put into my 2011 Subaru Outback’s transmission from the onset, and Idemitsu ATF Type HP has never proven me wrong. I do a complete ATF fluid change every 30k miles by draining the transmission via the drain plug and also running the engine with the transmission cooler line disconnected and routed into a container to get nearly 100% of the fluid drained and changed to fresh Type HP ATF. My Outback now has over 150k miles with its original transmission, so obviously maintenance is a huge key to longevity. The fluid isn’t cheap, but it is exactly what the manufacture recommends without having to go the universal ATF route.

It’s what is recommended in the Subaru owners manual. It’s a little on the pricey side

  9. Matt F

A much more cost effective ATF for Subaru owners.

Same as OE Subaru as far as I understand…

  10. DJ

Worked great in my 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R with the 5EAT Automatic Transmission, 180k miles, had to replace a faulty Turbine Speed Sensor, which required me to remove the transmission pan and valve body. I wound up needing roughly 8.5 quarts to refill it and get it back to level after this repair, I only ordered one gallon and regretted it, I should have ordered 2!
