Worked perfectly on my 03 Civic LX! My gas cap was original to the vehicle and recently my check engine light came on. I could smell gas when unloading groceries next to my rear driver side door for a few weeks before the light came on. I decided to start with replacing the gas cap since it was the cheapest first step and the old one was very loose. No more gas smell and no more check engine light! Replace your gas caps before going to the mechanic guys!

Had the pesky problem of the check engine light coming on after replacing original gas cap with an after market one. Within 5 minutes of swapping the cap out for this Honda one, the light went out and hasn’t come back on.

Expensive but worth it. Reviews on aftermarket gas caps weren’t good and people still had codes come up a month later, until they bought a GENUINE Honda gas cap. Use the money you would waste on an aftermarket cap and put it toward this one and clear the codes for good or just go to the wreckers and buy a used one, your call.

From this get go not part of any promotion to try this thing out….I am the owner of a 2002 Honda CRV with over 300K..During the past 5 years had that dreaded C.E.L illuminated. Countless times to the auto zones and advanced auto for code readings and the P0420 code over and over.
replaced the front and rear sensors as well as the center muffler and still was getting the 0420 code one day while fueling up I noticed the oring was way up inside the gas cap . I pried it down to the top of the first plastic thread & noticed when I Tightened the fuel cap it was little tough to tighten and getting to the clicks.. Once fueled and 20 miles into the drive the light went out and stayed out for close to 700 miles before illuminating .when I filled up again noticed the oring slipped back up underneath the top of the cap I repeated the above and again the light went out but this time for 350 miles …The exiting gas cap was a STANT gas cap that I had purchased about 6 years ago Hey it is a gas cap and it fit the fuel neck I got it from advanced auto off their computer look up …Last week after I played with the oring I decided with great hesitancy to try this gas cap and I tell you when it came and I opened the package The Honda Cap looks nothing like the STANT fuel cap from the underside with a few more ventilating perforations sealing the fuel neck ..I installed the Honda Gas cap and did the 3 clicks..I drove and drove for what seemed like eternity and just when I was about to give up I was driving this morning and the light went off after the cap was on for the first 20 miles.. so Yes regardless of what the codes say at the auto stores order this gas cap first yes it is over $30.00 and drive 20 miles with this one installed before venturing off swapping parts out like i did first .You will notice though a big difference in the Honda cap against the competitors .

If you’re getting a check engine light and haven’t replaced your fuel cap in 20 years like us, I’d recommend this one since it appears to be a genuine HONDA part and cost less than half what the dealership quoted. This one was a good fit for our 2001 Civic EX. Original one didn’t look so bad, but I think it was too dry to create a good seal.
Years ago, we got the P1456 EVAP code on our personal OBD scan tool. We didn’t replace the cap right away, just used the scan tool to erase the check engine code until the light would come back, but we smelled “natural gas” every time we’d park the car–not gasoline smell, but the same smell that comes from our kitchen range. Dealership wouldn’t mention it during routine inspections, so we went years like that. Before we bought this cap, the check engine light was coming back weeks or days after we’d erase the code using the scan tool. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND SAME TROUBLE CODE DID COME ON ONCE AFTER WE GOT THE NEW CAP, but so far, only that one time.
The smell didn’t go away completely–actually haven’t noticed it lately–so I’ll update if I see any repairs in our future, but crossing my fingers that this was it.
About a year later, the smell is back and the same check engine code a couple of times, so I need to do something else. I wish I knew if it was JUST the cap. Maybe the smell is the fuel, so there might be a leak somewhere, but again, routine inspections never mention it. Ugh.
