This timing belt fit perfect on my 2002 ford focus ztw wagon with the 2.0 zetec engine. Came with an extra idler pulley that was not needed on my model of engine. Price was the lowest for a Gates belt..

This kit worked, for the most part on my 1998 ZX 2. There was one pulley that wouldn’t work, it was the upper idler. The tensioner and lower idler worked. The upper idler in the kit had the wrong thread on the bolt and the bolt was smaller in diameter. I suppose that the pulley could have been drilled out to fit my larger diameter bolt, but I was pressed for time and used the old upper Idler. I believe the smaller lower Idler is the pulley that fails so no harm no foul. The belt size and number of teeth is correct etc. As for the pulley situation, it is hard to blame Gates because Ford is notorious for changing their engine design/layouts. Product installed and working as expected. Belt looks substantial and not as flimsy as I have encountered.

Be careful not to overtorque, even a bit, the idler pulley. Belt, tensioner, and pulley all fit well enough, but the sleeve around the idler pulley bolt crumbled at the edge near the bearing as I was installing it. The alloy was much softer than the OEM one, and I considered re-using the original idler but it seemed to be centred and secure so I left it. A couple of weeks later, I heard a ticking sound coming from that area and thought, “oh sh*t, should have re-used the old idler”. As I prepared to take it all apart again to do just that, I noticed one of the 3 bolts to the water pump pulley (which is in the same vicinity as the timing belt idler) had fallen off. Got a replacement bolt from the hardware store, installed it, and the ticking went away. So, the idler seems to be on reprieve … for now 🙂

Replacing a timing belt can be a fairly involved process… but with the right tools, a little patience and some preparation, doing the job yourself can save a ton of money. I have replaced all three of my kid’s timing belts now, one in a Ford focus, one in a Toyota Paseo, and one in a Honda Civic, I’ve used the Gates products and providing you take the time to make sure you’ve ordered the correct kit, (not all sites on the internet are accurate when it comes to the right kit number, so verify, verify, verify before you click “buy”) the belts, idlers and tensioners work as required. If you’re doing it yourself, make the investment in a service manual and research the job to see if you’ll need any specialty tools, can’t stress the preparation enough, if you have good mechanical aptitude you should be able to tackle almost any timing belt job and keep a few hundred bucks in your pocket.

OK, So I used the system to pick the part I needed and verified it was the same part number the manufacturer (gates) said it needed to be for my car. Ordered and received it and tore my motor down for installation. Upon removal of the other belt I opened the package and compared the two only to find that the new belt provided was about three inches to long. Though, the idler and tensioner where the correct parts. I was forced to buy a belt from a local parts store and they sold me the same part number that was supposed to be in this kit and it was the correct belt…..Go figure. I could not send the belt back as the package was opened. Which is ridiculous, how can you verify the part without removing it from the package?)Needless to say I won’t be buying parts from Amazon anymore.
