I have had good experiences using Gates parts and was glad to find this belt tensioner for our 2006 T & C at Amazon. I changed this part and the idler pulley because of belt noises and because the parts were easy to change and not expensive. This Gates belt tensioner was actually better than the original because it has an additional tab on the non-pulley end that allows for the insertion of a 1/2-inch rachet drive so you can uncock the thing to get the belt off. The lone tab on the original is by the pulley end and accessible only to a flatter serpentine belt tool. I used a 14-inch plumber’s wrench to grasp the pulley mount to get the old one to uncock; that tool did no damage. Installation was rational and easy. As for the belt noises, the true cause was the overrunning pulley on the alternator, but that is a different review. One last thing on that other pulley, the idler pulley: the bolt holding it on is right-hand threaded, contrary to the instructions in the van’s owner’s manual. Check out the YouTube video on changing these items for the 2006 T & C; I would have broken something semi-major if I had not.

This is an exact replacement unit; straightforward job. One nice change is the tension relief access. The original required that the engine be lowered 50 – 60 mm in order to insert the tool and relieve tension on the belt. Next belt replacement will not require it.

I had to replace my alternator and figured I’d replace the tensioner and idler pulleys while I was at it. This Tensioner Assembly did not fit properly. When installed it jammed against the Crankshaft pulley. The out frame is nice and beefy, but it is larger in diameter that the OEM. I ended up going to the local parts store and purchasing just the tensioner pulley and kept the remainder of the OEM tensioner assembly. This one is going back.
Many have commented positively on the large tension relief tab on this assembly. I found it to be too large. The OEM tab requires a 19mm wrench and the Gates tab requires a 30mm. That size wrench will not fit in the tight working space around the Tensioner. Although, the Gates has a 1/2″ cutout for inserting a 1/2″ ratchet or breaker bar. I find the 19mm open end wrench works best for me.
Lastly, the included mounting bolt has a 10mm head vs. a 13mm head on the OEM bolt. A lot easier to strip a 10mm vs a 13mm. It isn’t a big deal, I’d just suggest reusing the OEM bolt if you do choose to use this assembly.

Once i jacked up the van and removed the plastic splash shield, I got this thing on in 15 minutes. Didn’t even remove the wheel. In case you’re wondering, the OEM one is made by Dayco, but this one does the job just fine.

I purchased this Gates tensioner along with a new Gates drive belt and idler pully for my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan (3.8L engine). I chose to replace these items as a part of routine maintenance since it hadn’t been done in over 90K miles. While installing the tensioner, I noticed that the OEM tensioner that I was replacing was a Dayco unit. After I was done, all seemed well until about a month later, the belt started squealing briefly on cold start-ups. Then as the days went by it got worse – the squealing was happening for the first few minutes of driving. Then it started happening whenever the van was idling. This annoyed the heck out of my wife, so off I went to repair the problem.
I replaced both the tensioner and the drive belt again with Dayco parts. That fixed it, and seven months later, the drive belt system is still quiet. Seems a bit odd since I’ve never had problems with Gates belts/tensioners in the past. But lesson learned. 🙂

The original unit on my Caravan that this replaced did not have the extra tab on it to loosen the tension for belt replacement. This one does and makes for a much smoother install. So far it has performed well.
