This pulley is the same as sold at name brand auto retailers but the savings is almost 50% over the retailers price. Gates is a very reliable name brand bearing provider and I was looking for this specific item. I installed it on my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue and have had no problems with this pulley. I always compare on Amazon for better deals after I research at the local retail stores.

My 40k mile, stock 01 T/A developed flickering lights and eratic voltage. It also had a belt chirp at start up that would clear up after a few miles…. Bought a new AC Delco # 335 1075 alternator. After much research on the internet, I decided that I should also replace the idler pulley while I had it apart.. Went with the Gates 38041 pulley because was considerably less expensive than the OEM pulley. Fixed all ! Very satisfied with the result.

My opinion about this product –
It took a while to locate the right auxiliary idler pulley that goes around the power steering pulley then alternator pulley then this AUXILIARY IDLER PULLEY THEN TO THE CRANK PULLEY..
I’ve been searching and searching for the correct idler, and many sites, including Amazon suggested that this was the correct one NO IT WAS NOT, either it’s too small or the bearing is pressed too far back or the actual width is too thin that that belt is riding on
multiple multiple purchases and returns. I finally found this one. It was a pleasure to see it is 100% exact replacement no modifications no extra SHIMS ,,,it’s exact yes guys it cost more than these others out there but you know sometimes it pays to get the exact direct fit parts,,,why go through the hassle this is the one for that particular area. Good luck. Thank you so much
I’ve been looking for a replacement aux idler pulley that again travels along alternator/ power steering pump then this pulley then to crank its 100 % direct replacement, it’s not a smaller diameter it’s surface is the exact width necessary for the belt to ride against no modifications no shims nothing exactly fits perfect I hate to keep repeating myself, but I have been down this road.
, so this is the answer that we were looking for. Good luck guys. I definitely recommend this for that situation remember these components are getting up there in age and wear I replaced all 3 idlers and both belts I don’t won’t s failure on a simple replacement

I replaced mine with this Gates p/n 38041 about 3-months ago, but I’m not sure if this is any better. It was part of a larger project, so I didn’t pay much attention to it. So far, it’s holding just fine. Here is a photo I took before the install.

I have always used GATES belts – hoses – pulleys because they last –
