And I hear what you are saying: “Land Yacht” “Old Man’s Car” “Crusher Bait! It’s OK. I have heard them all. It IS a Land Yacht…drives like a dream on long trips; comfortable for FIVE adult-sized people AND their luggage in a massive trunk. Peppy V6 that moves right along smoothly down the highway. And it IS an “old man’s car since I AM an OLD man…77 on my last birthday. I bought this car new in 2001 and have put every one of its 200,000+ miles on it. Well, my wife helped after we married. She LOVES driving the Avalon, too. It has been, by ANY subjective measure, an exceptional car. Until lately.
So, the gas cap.
For several months, I have been getting a CHECK ENGINE VSC OFF warning on the dash display. VSC is the Vehicle Skid Control and gets turned off to take the extra load off the engine. I get out my trusty OBD II onboard fault detector and look up the trouble codes for CHECK ENGINE VSC OFF and it shows Emission Control Issues, Possible Oxygen Sensor and/or Transmission electronics errors. It suggests a DIAGNOSTIC checkup at the Toyota dealer. OK, the basic diagnostic fee at the dealer is $100.00 to do exactly what I just did with my own OBD II scanner. Get the trouble codes. Then the dealer will TRY to get to the bottom of the problem by checking EVERYTHING. That’s a hundred or two more with no guarantees that anything gets fixed.
So, the gas cap.
The dealer where I bought my car had a mechanic who worked on it for years. He was ASC certified and a Toyota trained specialist and we shared a hobby, scuba diving, and were both SCCA Autocross weekend racers. We got to be good friends…Gordie is the REASON I have an OBD II scanner in my toolkit!
By now, I am frustrated with the dealer, worried that my Avalon is truly past his prime and I call Gordie who, like me, is old, retired, bored, and happy to talk…
It’s NOT all good news. IF the emission control and/or Oxygen sensor are kaput I’m looking at a $400 to $900 repair with NO guarantee that will be the end of the problem. The Avalon is worth about $2000 according to the Kelly Blue Book and the North Carolina Tax Man who charges me every year to operate it on his roads. Paying 25% of its value for a “maybe” fix seems crazy, no matter how much I love this car.
As we are talking, Gordie says “Just out of curiosity, how old is your gas cap on the Avalon.” Huh? What?
I have NO idea. I do KNOW it is not the 23-year-old original. It was replaced somewhere over the TWO DECADE life of my car. So, Gordie says “Before you take it to the dealer, get a new OEM Gas Cap made for the years that include the 2001 Avalon XLS V6. Swap out the old cap and see what happens.” “No promises, but worth a try…”
Off to Amazon where I find an EXACT match for my gas cap with some slight changes (see photos). The cap arrived on the 18th and was installed immediately. On January 20th, the onboard computer NO LONGER SHOWS THE FAULT and the OBD II shows NO ERROR CODES presently on in the cars diagnostic array!
So, I CAN NOT say that the problem is “FIXED” but I can say that I am NOT going to the dealer for any diagnostic work, at least for now. The gas cap cost $9.99 plus tax with free shipping, thanks, PRIME!
$900.00 + at the dealer OR $10.72 at AMAZON. The choice is yours, but it MAY be time to check YOUR gas cap threads and gaskets BEFORE that first CHECK ENGINE light appears! THANKS AGAIN, GORDIE!

I bought this as a replacement for one of my cars and it worked great up until about the 4 month mark. The plastic is all cracked and broken already, I recommend looking for another company.
