I’m using this fuel pump as a primer pump. Install on a 74 Jeep CJ5 that sometimes sits in the garage for a week or more without starting. Gas from the one barrel Carter carburetor either evaporates or drains back to the mechanical fuel pump about thirty inches away. The mechanical fuel pump is supposed to have a check valve to prevent gas from draining back past it but not sure this is true. Starting after a prolonged period requires a lot of cranking and pumping the gas pedal to activate the accelerator pump in the carburetor. Easier to just take off air cleaner and pour a few ounces of gasoline directly into carburetor which results in immediate starts. Installed this little pump about a foot from the gas tank in the rear and mounted to the frame of the Jeep. The mounting location is about a foot higher than the bottom of the gas tank. This is necessary to keep the pump out of harms way when driving off road. The pump would not prime itself initially from the empty fuel line although it’s described as self priming with a 60” dry lift capacity. Installation instructions said it has a maximum of 12” lift for fuel. This pump allows fuel to flow through one way so it works with the mechanical stock fuel pump no problem. The Facet pump also has a check valve to prevent fuel from draining backwards. Once fuel is present in the fuel line the pump appears to work properly. The Jeep hasn’t gone more than three or four days without being started so I’m not sure how effective the pump actually is for my purpose. Instructions say the pump should be installed at a 45 degree angle for best results. This is impractical in my application and I suspect in many applications since this creates routing problems for the fuel line. I mounted the pump horizontally and this is one of the acceptable mounting options. The pump is loud enough to hear the change in sound when it is building pressure but not overly loud. It will not cut off when it reaches maximum pressure output as I thought it would but you can hear the sound reach a constant level and know it is pressurized. A screw in fuel filter should be used on the inlet side of pump to prevent premature failure. This is the only brand of reasonably priced pumps I could find that is made in the USA. Four Star rating would have been Five Star if the pump had actually been self priming. I used a flush mounting momentary switch to manually activate the pump.
Update: After using the pump for a couple of months I can definitely say that the pump is self priming after initial installation. As stated in initial review pump would not self prime an empty fuel line that had been cut and drained when installing pump even though it was only about twelve inches above bottom of fuel tank. Since initial installation the pump immediately picks up fuel from tank and pressurizes fuel line in 2-3 seconds. A distinct change of sound let’s you know the pump has pressurized the fuel line all the way through the manual fuel pump and up to to the carburetor. Start up is immediate now even after the vehicle has not been started for two weeks. I would normally have to remove the air cleaner and pour 2-3 ounces of fuel directly into carburetor in order to start the vehicle. The install was definitely worth the convenience of not having to do this. I am upgrading from four to five stars.
