Very, very cheap – meaning it’s extremely inexpensive and probably a good deal if you just need to measure rpm when doing engine diagnostics. However, it’s also very cheap in the “janky” way. Flimsiest plastic you’ve ever seen, and mine was broken right out of the box. It’s like something you’d get at the Dollar Tree. You will not want this installed in your car.

Gauge reads anywhere from 10-20lbs off, and is not even consistent. Measured against several known good air compressor gauges, as well as a Mityvac. It was too cheap to bother returning, so I cracked it open to see what I could find. Everything inside appeared to be in order, no obvious obstructions. The gauge face is non-adjustable, meaning you can’t rotate it to resolve inaccuracies (moot, since this one reads different every time you apply pressure/vacuum).
Not necessarily a con per se, but the backlighting is a BRIGHT blue LED.

For the price, and judging by many of the reviews, I didn’t have high expectations for this tach. To my pleasant surprise, it actually works quite well! I compared the tach’s reading with an OBD scanner and found the RPMs to be nearly spot on. Quite amazed by this little gauge given its price point.
The instructions were garbage though. Just a single page of paper with a poorly laid out schematic for all of the gauges this company manufactures. It had no instructions on how to properly calibrate the tach – which I suspect is the issue with most of the reviews on here. You have a set button in the back and you have to set the proper number of cylinders for the tach to get a proper reading. With no instructions to go off of, it took me some time to figure this out.
Overall, very happy with the product!

AutoMeter makes its gauges in downtown Sycamore, Illinois U.S.A. wishing I would have spent $60 more for the 2-3/4″ PEDESTAL TACHOMETER, 0-6,000 RPM #2306.
It’s not necessarily cheap construction- just the most inexpensive gauge they could possibly make…It’s only $15!
A basic 12V wiring skill level is required, but do see how a novice could misunderstand instructions.
Bright blue LED is way too much at night placing a small piece of window tint film over the lens.
Press and hold the set button, single tap until the needle points to the correct cylinder count, i.e., 6,7,8.
I am pleased about the price, and everything works as suggested; However, I now recommend purchasing a much higher quality level.

You get what you pay for! Why did I think I could get a good tachometer for under $20? It came with a really cheap plastic case that it did not even fit into. No directions. So far so good because I was just going to insert the works into a chrome case from my last tachometer. But the button on the back that was supposed to select the number of cylinders (I have a 2 cylinder motorcycle) had no effect. The tach never went above 1200 RMP no matter how I revved the engine. Makes and excellent paperweight though.

This is a great tach for being budget friendly. The instructions aren’t quite clear on how to set the amount of cylinders. Press and hold the set button then tap until the needle is on the correct cylinder count. Wiring was simple with the use of a coil.

Best price, works, and is simple. The key here is color coding, all you need is; white to power (switched power not constant) , black to ground, green to distributer or your cto wire, yellow to light switch if you want to illuminate it… thats it. I don’t know what red is for as it doesn’t power it, the white does. Yes the housing on mine was strange but can be modified easy. See the other reviews for instructions on setting # of cylinders.

I Purchased this to tune my engine and dont plan to install it in the vehicle. The gauge works, looks like a $30 gauge, the backlighting is way too bright (this could be a flashlight), and the gauge does not fit snugly in the very cheaply made housing. Due to the poor fit into the cheap housing, you cannot mount this gauge without some engineering. And the housing looks like it will break. I would not install this in a vehicle unless I didn’t care at all about looks and didn’t hook up the backlighting. The gauge itself is accurate, it was easy to set it to 8 cylinder mode and it did the job of helping tune the engine. I would buy it again for that purpose but if you mounting it in the vehicle, pick something else.
