  1. WeBuyEverythingOnAmazon

About 2 minutes after I texted my niece’s daughter that these arrived today, POOF, she appeared and demanded my time to put them into her ancient (OK, 2006, if you must know) Kia Optima with the V6 engine (2.7L – kind of a rare combo that I think mostly went into Hyundais of that era, not so much Kias).

Well, luckily I had about 25 minutes to spare, and it only would have taken 5-10 minutes if I was just doing the coils, but the 25 minutes, which became 50-ish minutes, isn’t too bad considering six plugs, three of them underneath the intake manifold (which I did remove/replace – easy and quick enough) on the distant side of a transverse V6 that’s crammed into a tiny engine bay, but that time still counts the time getting out the rachet set with plug sockets, and checking the gaps on the plugs (they were spot-on right out of the box, but you should ALWAYS check gaps).

So it’s a job for somebody handy but not an auto tech or anything – not even a “shade tree mechanic” is needed – it does help if you know your way around an engine bay because you might loosen a couple other things and you do move some air plumbing out of the way, but it’s not that hard. I re-used the intake manifold gasked and I re-torqued the manifold in correct order to 15 lb-ft of torque each – so having a torque wrench is pretty useful, but not really essential since those intake manifold torque specs are really just to prevent over-tightening into the aluminum block and to give you a standard number to get them all relatively evenly tight and to make you pay attention to the order in which you tighten them. If the gasket is good and you’re anywhere close to 15-20 lb ft of torque, something you can do by FEEL if you know the length of your ratchet handle – it’s usually either 8-ish inches or about a foot long), and you’re careful not to over-tighten, well, you’ll be fine… (Oh, and while you’re in there, DROWN that intake manifold with a good cleaner that you don’t mind getting down into your oil, eventually, which you should then change anyway, IF you spot any gunk or carbon, which you should NOT spot, but it is a Kia, after all.)

So the job does take time and the plugs that come with this set are NICE and definitely iridium and they fire beautifully especially with the new coils. The coils are WELL MADE with nice even seams and heavy plastic housing and good heft (lotsa metal inside ‘em) and they fit tightly over the plugs and the wire connectors click right into them solidly and stay put. No problems. No issues.

Performance is night and day difference on an Optima of this age and this many miles – in a 2.7L that’s only still running because I demand she does oil changes all the time and I tell her not to do stupid stuff. (My mantra: “don’t do stupid stuff … DDSS) And she’s good to the car and it still looks nice (a repaint helped a couple years back) and now it runs well.

No more stalling, a Kia trademark move. No more stuttering. Quick acceleration. Pavement was a bit wet and she lit up the tires – by accident – I think she wasn’t used to the big V6 in that Optima actually running like, um, a big V6 (well, big for such a small car). All great. OBD2 port read no problems after clearing out all the fuel errors, and all the per-cylinder trimming the ECU was doing with the injectors evaporated back to near-none, except maybe where an injector was a bit cloggy, but some of that FoamySea stuff will handle that, and I added some to the fuel, and some to the crankcase.

Amazing what new coils and new iridium plugs can do! Low cost power-restoration that doesn’t take much time. And this set has good plugs and good coils and the proof is in the OBD readouts and the car’s ECM that’s telling us it’s running perfectly on the new ignition system. Wonderful – I highly recommend!

  2. Water got in both lights and they want replace them junk

Coils are junk truck.Wouldn’t even start after putting them on.How to put the old ones back on to get it to run? They will not refund or replace them
