There’s a Forman video online that differs from the written instructions. Watch video and read instructions. I wish I did both before I go started. Not sure if I fried the programmer, but I accidentally started the truck with the non-transponder key. The programmer beeped and I put the first new transponder key in and turn to on position without starting and programmer was blinking like it should, but I waited more than 10 mins and nothing. I was able to reinstall my old cylinder to start the truck up again. I will try again in the morning and if I have no luck I’ll take it to locksmith to program it. The programmer does not respond since it’s first try, but again I’m not sure if I fouled it up or not.

    Working well thanks

Had an ignition lock that was stuck. Watched a couple YouTube videos and this worked like a charm. The hardest part was the key programming. I ended up only getting one key to program to the truck, but that was better than nothing.

As has been mentioned, know how to install BEFORE you install it. The instructions are clear, though written is three languages, so it looks like a lot of steps. Dorman has online videos specific to the Manufacturer Part Number (mine was 989-714) that you can follow with the written instructions.
I underlined the parts that were most important to me before beginning and went step by step.

Each step simple but it can become complicated as they pile on, so keep track as you go so you don’t mess up by going out of order. It all worked as it was supposed to and I was pleasantly relieved.

I now have to get non-transponder type keys made from my original ignition key in order to unlock the doors, so don’t throw that one away when you’re done. All in all a pretty good product at a fair price with immediate results . Don’t know how long this one will last but the original lasted 24 years.

Worked great on a 2001 f150. Included programmer worked perfect the first time. Follow the included instructions and it should be all good! Great product.

  6. Amazon Customer

instructions were very poor, and key coding didn’t work at all. complete waste of time.

  7. George M.

Worked exactly like the instructions said it would. Fixed my problem. You do need at least one transponder key for it to work.

  8. Brian Bridges

Long review but I need to define some key points that may affect your results using this ignition lock set and programmer. Application, 2002 Ford F-150 5.4 liter Super Crew Cab
The ignition cylinder and key on my truck was pretty much worn out it would no longer move into the accessory position and was difficult moving into the Off, Run, and start position. After 17 years it was suffering quite a bit of wear and tear. So the solution was to replace the lock cylinder and matching keys. This truck does have the anti theft transponder so the new keys have to be programmed to work properly. Most parts stores stock these replacement cylinders at around $65-70 but still need to have the dealer program the keys. So Amazon carries a Dorman lock cylinder and it comes with the programmer. So I’m thinking I can save a bundle of money by programming the keys myself. I read the instructions a few times and even went to the Dorman website to see if there were any changes. I’m pretty well versed with the instructions so I feel confident and ready to tackle this project. I’m only going to outline a few key steps that are the most important to the programming procedure. Remove the old lock cylinder and install the new cylinder, pretty simple and easy to do. The kit comes with three keys, 2 programmable and one regular non programmable key. The instruction say to insert the non programmable key and hold the original key near the lock and start the vehicle. Worked just as the instructions indicated then plug the programmer into the OBD2 port and it should beep. That step worked. Then insert the first programmable key into the ignition and turn it to the run position. Do not start the truck so I didn’t. The instructions say the LED should blink rapidly and after Ten minutes blink slowly. Then switch the key off and back to the run position. But the LED never blinked and I let it sit for 15 minutes but nothing happened so I double checked the instructions and I had followed them exactly. So I called the Dorman tech line. I was on the phone talking with him for 45 minutes I realized he doesn’t have a clue, he was reading off the same instruction sheet I was using but he suggested I install the original lock cylinder and see if the truck would start. Nope no start so now I can’t use the truck at all the original key was dead, the new keys were dead, the truck is dead. So I was completely livid. He suggested I return everything to Amazon and they would replace it. I explained it would make no difference because you still need a working transponder key. I could have a box full of replacement kits but without a working original key you can’t program the new keys. Plus I would out for a number of days with no vehicle. In desperation I had one chance left. I hunted down my spare key and gave it a try and the truck started. Yay! But the original problem remains. So after a bit of head scratching I headed to a locksmith. He installed the new cylinder that came in the kit and reprogrammed the two new keys. The cylinder was fine but the failure is with the programmer. My recommendation is to buy the cheaper lock cylinder and have the keys programmed by a locksmith or dealer. They guy felt pretty sorry for me after I had spent almost two hours trying to resolve my problem so he only charged me $80, so if you want to save money buy the $30 cylinder and have it programmed professionally. The kit with the programmer is risky at best, if it fails like mine did, you’re stuck with an unusable vehicle, there is no recourse, it can not be redone, it will kill the working key.

It’s a rather intricate set of steps to get this key set up, but the steps aren’t hard to follow and I was able to do it the first time. Note that these keys will not match your door locks and you’ll need to do some locksmithing to make that happen. I chose this path because my ignition key and switch were worn beyond service limits and it was important to me to replace it with a chip key. This seemed like the best way to get it done.

Also note I had some problem with the “key in ignition” tone sounding because there was too much grease on a small plastic+brass sensor tab in the cylinder I was shipped. It works properly after cleaning that up somewhat. But it did take a while to figure this out and it was after doing the programming, which would have made the part very hard to swap out for a new key.

  10. Valerie Rivero

I used this to replace the ignition cylinder on my 2001 F150. The instructions were simple and easy to follow. Instead of paying an insane amount somewhere else, I was able to do it in my own driveway. Ignition cylinders with non-chip keys are around 20 bucks. I’ve seen ignition cylinders with the transponder keys around 60 bucks. And that does NOT include the cost of programming the chip. Well worth the money.

I have a remote fob that unlocks the doors so I don’t need to worry about having several keys for the truck. Eventually, I will rekey the tailgate lock but not a big deal.
