I installed the Dorman 748-518 window regulator in the front driver door of a 2006 Chevy Equinox. I was able to complete the install and end up with a functional window and at the end of the day that’s what you’re after if you’re here reading this. There was an issue with the part that I was able to overcome but it’s the reason I wanted to review it. The thing is, I am an experienced mechanic and I realize this isn’t the case for everyone which is to say that the problems I encountered with this window regulator weren’t a deal breaker for me but if you’re needing a plug and play experience then this part may not be for you. The particular problem that I had with 748-518 was that there was a captive nut the was missing for the mounting of the interior door release lever. A cut out for the nut was provided but not populated. It may have had a defective part but comparing some of the features of the Dorman part with the OE led me to conclude that the aftermarket unit was too “universal”, if you understand my meaning. With some effort, I was able to pry a captive nut from the old unit and install the bolt to hold door lever on the new unit. The lever has two bolts that retain it plus a sheet metal screw. There was no good option for the mounting of the sheet screw so I left it out as I felt comfortable with the two bolts in place. Overall, I was able to get the job done and be confident in the result which is what I payed for but just be aware of my experience and make an informed decision.

I finally decided to change out my window regulator and motor after fighting with it for months. Like many other things, I wish that I did it sooner now. This kit made it easy and the total replacement took me less than 2 hours. The only thing that wasn’t perfect was the punched hole for the Lock/Latch bar guide. I just used a file to enlarge the hole and then it worked.

I would think twice about trying to replace this yourself not the easiest bad design taking out the screw and replacing with a clip in on a tone failed after about a week and a half and ruined my front trim on the driver window seeking return replacement now after two weeks Jeff de Crystal River

Purchasing these replacement parts from the dealer can be very expensive. Because of the Dorman price I expected this item to be somewhat of a cheap Taiwanese knockoff. I was surprised by the quality built into this part. It is made of heavy gauge corrosion resistant steel with what appears to be a well manufactured motor and gear assembly. I applaud Dorman for making a reasonably priced alternative to the original manufacturer part.
