Price was acceptable; unit arrived ahead of schedule and allowed me to know EXACTLY what was wrong with my battery (2 dead and one questionable cell(s)).
NOTE: To use this device, you must be able to access individual cells in your battery. Maintenance free sealed batteries cannot be tested using this device. Gel-electrolyte batteries cannot be tested using this device.
In order for specific gravity testing to be accurate, you must remove battery maintainers and chargers from the battery and let it sit for 72 hours. When my unit arrived, I immediately used it, and it showed every cell except one in the green area, and that one was only borderline “needs attention.” 72 hours later, I could see that 50% of my battery cells could not charge or maintain a charge.
When measuring the specific gravity in each cell, shake the device to remove any small bubbles which may be clinging to the weighted indicator. They will give an inaccurate high reading if not removed from the indicator.
Be sure to have old rags or paper towels lying on or near your battery in order to catch any splash or drip of battery acid. As careful as you are, these small drops of acid can splash on areas and later turn into rust.
Finally, be sure to squirt all water back into each cell. DO NOT MIX water from one cell to the next.
Device has a strong rubber type odor which I can tell will last for years, so if you are sensitive to rubber or rubber products wear nitrile gloves when using and after use rinse the inside at least with clean water, reverse osmosis or distilled water would be even better. Keep the device pick-up tube the low point at all times so that no acid laced water gets into the bulb to prematurely rot it out.
Finally – the device is shipped in a blister pack which must be smaller than the original, because the instructions mention how to properly position the float and install the pick-up tube, but NOWHERE do they tell you that the squeeze bulb is pushed all the way down on the large glass tube. So before use, carefully work the squeeze bulb up the tube (mine was stuck – as if it had been manufactured five years ago and had not moved since) using fingernails around the bottom edge and taking your time. Leave about 1/4″ of tube inside the squeeze bulb and it should work perfectly for you.

Deka’s old fashion standard battery hydrometer comes with no batteries required, no assembly required, no adjustments needed. Just open the package and use. It’s exactly the tool I wanted and needed. Just a simple good ole reliable battery hydrometer.
I tested 21 batteries here on the farm the day I received it. Found one battery that was unknowingly to me, about to fail. No doubt that saved having a bad day being stuck off somewhere in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery. After checking my 21 batteries, I simply washed the hydrometer out and tucked it away, ready for many more years of reliable use. Recommended!

I always use a hydrometer on a battery with accessible cells. It’s the best way to test each cell individually. This Deka hydrometer is BIG. Very well made. The only downside is that you must have a battery cell that is full of acid. This thing sucks up alot of acid. So, if you’re battery is low on acid, this tool is not for you. Remember, only use DISTILLED water to fill up a battery cell. Tap water will kill the battery due to impurities.

Finally caved in and got one of these so I can learn how to use it. I have a small solar setup with 2 GC2 batteries from Costco and never new their state of charge. The charger itself doesn’t show the condition of the cells without measuring the SG of each cell. My batteries were 2 years old and they are about in the lower green part. It’s a very handy tool but please wear safety gloves when dealing with battery and their electrolytes, etc.

Bought two since I use them regularly for a lot if different batteries in different locations in my home shop. Have had one like this for 25 years and accidentally cracked it a few days prior to purchasing these. All 3 read the same so I knew accuracy wasn’t going to be an issue.
Assembly is common sense. It’s very thin glass folks, do not use excessive force and you won’t break it during assembly!🙄
For those who claim this device gives an inconsistent reading…
Your using it incorrectly. Simple as that!
Do NOT suck up ANY air or you will NOT get an accurate reading, ever. Period!
Just because the inner glass tube touches the outter tube glass, doesn’t mean your reading will be off either. Slightly tilt the tube and the glass will relocate itself and show you the correct reading.
