Prevent my battery from discharging

I wanted a shutoff switch for my riding lawn mower. I suspect there might be a parasitic leak or something draining the battery. The two bolts that come with the switch are huge. It will not fit a small battery. I had to use a drill bit, yes that’s right, a drill bit to make the hole bigger on the positive terminal. I was then able to screw the bolts in. Another problem was how the bolts were different sizes for each other. They are not the same meaning you can’t switch the bolts to the other hole. One bolt is slightly bigger in width and longer. I made it work but 4 stars because this switch is too big and the bolts too.

Because my lawn tractor sits idle for months, its battery would often be dead in the spring, just when I needed it again. While I could simply disconnect the negative cable from the battery during the off season, this cutoff switch proved to be the perfect solution. I did have to make a slight modification, however. One of the holes in the switch is threaded for a 3/8-inch bolt, and the switch comes with two 3/8″ bolts. But the hole in my battery terminal as well as the negative cable were slightly smaller. I solved that by purchasing a 5/16″ x 1″ stainless steel bolt, 2 SS washers, and a SS nut (and a second 5/16″x3/4″ bolt, nut, and washer to attach the negative cable). It then took just a few minutes to install the cutoff switch, which is now firmly attached to the battery and works perfectly.

I was surprised when I opened the box and there was a screw and Allen wrench in the box. Then one side of the switch fell off. Apparently, the person responsible for assembling the switch was in a hurry and only did half a job. I screwed the brass connector to the crossbar and then used the Allen wrench and my nut driver to tighten the bolt that is the hinge for the disconnect blade. When I tried to put the disconnect on the battery, I noticed that the part that was loose and in the box did not get the flashing in the hole cleaned out so it wouldn’t fit over the battery terminal. I had to use a file to clean up the hole so that it would fit. Other than that, it is well made and works well on my battery.
