  1. Mario

Stopped working right after the return window. POS

Update: Second one I bought died too. I am 100% sure the wiring is correct. There are a few folks on forums who talk about the same issue I’m seeing. Basically the unit, after being not used for a few days. Starts throwing 12v on one of the trailer pin, 5 on the other, then 3 then 0. Nothing on the vehicle side changes any of the voltage. (brakes, turn signals etc) This is on a Mazda cx-5 2016. Buying a different brand and will update review to link to it if it works for longer than this crap did

Worked great on my 2016.5 Mazda CX-5. The 16.5 has LED lights that necessitate this kit. It requires a wire be installed from the positive battery terminal to the driver side trunk area. I ran the wire behind the front driver side wheel well and on top of the plastic panels under the car. Up around the brake hoses and suspension in the back and through an existing tail light grommet It was plug and play at the tail lights. There’s a good installation video on you tube produced by Curt. I’m pretty handy and to do a nice job it took me every bit of 2 hours. I bought the Curt Class 3 hitch as well and it fit great.

Installation was quote problematic. Wire connecting left and right side was too short. Nut needed to connect to battery was not included. The most problematic part, which is routing with to the battery is not covered by the instruction

  4. Menjara

This set was relatively easy to install, I did not use the internal instructions-instead used readily available YouTube videos for the exact model. (2016 CX-5) it took me about two hours to install, but after doing one if I had to do it again it would be much quicker. The most difficult part is running the wire from the battery to the back of the car. Are used zip ties as others have mentioned and feel like I did a pretty good job with it. Everything fits and works perfectly.

This is for a 2016 Mazda CX5 due to the LED tail lights from what I understand. In order to get enough power to run typical trailer lights you need to run a light directly to the battery terminal.

I would highly recommend watching the etrailer video AND the Curt trailer on how to install this. Then watch them again.

    1. I did not disconnect the battery.
    2. I ran the black battery line following the fuel/brake lines, fished it through the plastic under carriage panels. Under the fuel tank area, up over the rear sub frame of the AWD system, into a grommet behind the rear tire that ends up right below the tail lights. You can do with without a jack but ramps would have helped a lot.
    3. Ran the trailer 4 wire hook up back though the same grommet (cut it) to the trailer hitch. Sealed it with Marine Silicone caulking, I’m sure what ever weather proof stuff you got works too.
    4. Trunk process is OK for connecting the tail lights to the new harness, thats simple.
    5. Stuck the converter box deep into the side panel, certain places won’t let you put the car interior back together correctly.
    6. For the GROUND WIRE, I reused a OEM ground point, right behind the drivers rear tire panel you first look at. 10MM bolt, take it out, add your wire, screw back in. Then your not drill tap etc etc.

I connected the battery lead line LAST step. I gently lifted up on the positive battery terminal, the full box slides up and off. Then bolted the wire to one of the studs under the cap. You will need to find a nut, I used a old 10mm fine threaded nut from another car.

    Things to have handy.
Wire stripper and a crimper for those wire clamps.
    Electrical Tape.
Silicone Sealant if your cutting/removing Grommets.
Zip Ties, they give you some to get the basics, but I added about 10-15 under the car.

I’d account for several hours to complete this. Its not “hard” but it is challenging and tedious.

Very pleased with the cable harness. As a note – I decided not to run the 12VDC to the battery – but use the 12VDC (car plug adapter) that is located within my Mazda CX-5 in the cargo area. In addition, I mounted the mating trailer connector on the underside of my bumper so that I didn’t need to pull the cable out of my trunk every time (very easy to do)

  7. Mandy Hamilton

I can’t tell you how easy this was to install!! Amazingly easy and works great! I also watched the YouTube video on installation and so great! I will definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone. The only thing I would recommend different is using the accessory socket at the rear of the car instead of running the wire all the way to the battery.

  8. Amazon Customer

I received the kit and successfully installed it into my 2016.5 Mazda CX-5. I am handy-ish but don’t do much of this stuff so it usually takes me awhile. Installing this kit was no exception. I am a little more comfortable with exerting the necessary force it takes to dismantle the plastic pieces and found the instructions pretty clear and the install video on youtube helpful. As others have said – watch the video and expect it to be tedious but not difficult.

My star knockdown relates to the crimping connectors which I found useless. I could not get the wires to stay seated in what I felt like was a satisfactory manner. Instead I splices the wires together the old fashioned way (twisting them together) and used heat shrinking electrical tube I had on hand.

Installation took a while but was not that difficult if you are use to working on things. Might be hard for someone who doesn’t do their own work. Product is good, works without problems for my small utility trailer. I followed the video on etrailer.com, that helped a lot. The written instructions are hard to follow but the video helps a lot. My car is newer than the car on the video but basically the same. I found a small rubber plug on the left side of the trunk, poked a small hole there and ran the power wire through it. Plugged back in and it looks factory. Will put a dab of silicone sealer on it just in case but doesn’t look like water will get in. Used an extra post on the battery to hook up the power wire as on the video, just need a small nut that’s not in the kit. I lucked out and had one. I did not disconnect the negative terminal on the battery as you usually have to use a battery saver to not mess up the computer memory. If you hook up the ground last you don’t have to disconnect the battery as you won’t have anything live. Don’t disconnect negative terminal unless you have a battery saver. Otherwise you may have problems with the computer.

  10. Kinetic

Thought this might be difficult but my local hitch installer was charging so much I thought I’d give it a try. Talk about easy to install! Fit a 2016 Mazda CX-5 GS. No wire splicing required. There are a couple of youtube videos that show you the best path for the power line to be installed. Worked without problem first try.

    Great product
