I replaced the balance shaft chain/sprockets when I went ahead and did my timing chain kit. My Saturn Ion has 200k miles, and I replaced everything just in-case. My last car’s timing chain broke at 228k miles, and I LOVED that car. unfortunately, the ecotec is an interference engine, and it was toast. the whole job took me about 6 hours. dont forget to order a valve cover gasket and front cover gasket just in case. I was able to re-use my old ones, so I can return both to amazon for a full refund.

Purchased this based on user reviews and company reputation. Ordered the timing chain kit (9-4201SAVVT1) earlier along with this balance shaft kit (9-4202S). Assembled according to Cloyes online videos which were easy to follow and very descriptive. After reassembly, I started the car and it was making a slight whining noise, but nothing that sounded horrific. I figured it was just the new components being installed. Drove the car around the block and the noise stopped. Back in my driveway while the car was idling, I noticed the temp was running hot so I shut off the engine and investigated the issue. Knowing the balance chain also turns the water pump sprocket, I pulled the cover to inspect the pump sprocket, which turned easily by hand. The chain was also no longer on the water pump sprocket.
So I pulled the engine apart again to see what happened. I was hoping the chain for the balancer popped off or something else simple. I was shocked to see the main sprocket worn down to (almost) a smooth circle with all off the teeth worn off. All other sprockets looked good so I checked the tensioner. With little to no effort the tensioner compresses (see video) offering no resistance.
Now I have to order another kit, which I will inspect VERY carefully to make sure the tensioner is good prior to installation. AND because of this failure, I will also have to drop the oil pan to make sure there are no metal pieces from the broken sprocket teeth sitting in the bottom of the pan.
I was hoping for better quality from a reputable company like Cloyes.

About the same price as oem and quality seems to be as good. Easy to install and rattling all gone. I’ve used cloyes products on multiple applications and had pretty good success.

Replaced along with the timing chain kit. All the parts fit perfectly and were clearly marked for proper alignment. If you do the swap with the engine in the car, it is impossible to remove and replace the cam shaft sprokets. They did not seem worn so I’m not too concerned.

The application fitment system is wrong. This item is for an LE5 engine. It’s actually printed with that in the head gasket. The cooling hole ports are different. A head gasket that will work with an LAF engine will only be printed with LAF on the head gasket.
