To start off with, let’s address the elephant in the room, shall we? I like doing that, because elephants in the room can be uncomfortable for everyone.

That elephant in the room being, there are Level 1 / 16 Amp chargers available on Amazon for HALF this price. I’d be remiss in my duties as a reviewer to ignore that actuality. But here’s something I’d like you to consider, when looking at EV chargers in the $100-$300 range, which this charger sits at the absolute top of: Who made them? How long has the company been in business? Will they be in business next month? Next year? Can you email them and actually get a response? Will they honor their warranty?

These are questions you should be asking yourself, when you’re looking at chargers for your $75,000 car…is it worth a few more bucks, to get a charger from a name brand you recognize, that’s been around for a while, and will probably be around tomorrow? Well that’s a question only you can answer. But I know what MY answer will be.

Yes, it’s a bit pricier than others. But it’s from a name I recognize, and have used in the past (their solar battery tenders are awesome). Boy, that sure lends a lot of confidence when buying something like this.

This is definitely a charger you want to consider if you might take things “on the road”. Seeing as you can hook it to a “standard” 110v outlet, you’ll be able to charge just about anywhere. Just not very quickly, lol. 16 amps is definitely on the slower end of things, but as I said, plug-in-anywhere convenience is worth a lot. Your friends can’t say they don’t have a 220v outlet for you when you show up with this *wink*.

It comes with a nice carry bag, and it also wall-mountable. To be honest, I recommend NOT using the mounting bracket, and just keep this Level 1 charger in your car. Most folks will very much prefer the 32, 40, or 48 amp versions of this charger for their “home base” charger. But if you want to wall mount it, you can. I love how light it is, anybody should be able to carry it around and use it, regardless of their strength level.

If I had any complaints, it’s that the screen is a little small and hard to read. It has good contrast, but it could be about an inch larger for my eyes, lol. But it is very easy to use, with buttons clearly marked, and a legible manual.

Yes, it’s a bit more than some chargers in this category. But when you narrow that list down to include companies that have been around and will be around for sure tomorrow, that list narrow significantly. I like name brand, quality-made things when hooking them up to things like…expensive cars. Call me crazy if you like, I like this charger, despite its premium cost. Perhaps even because of it. 5 stars.

It works fast and works very well. It is an affordable option to other chargers and is very easy to set up and begin using. Great value.

This is a great charger overall, i have tested quite a few and have found that this is one the better units. What sets it apart from the other units is that you have the ability to monitor the unit while charging. In the EV world that is a major win. So overall a great charging unit and easy to set up. Great buy

This is a well made and functional–though very basic–EV charger best suited for use as a portable ‘emergency’ device to keep in the trunk. It includes a mounting bracket so you can adapt it to home use but personally I prefer a more robust charger for that purpose. It has a small LCD display that will give you charging information and error messages. The buttons integrated on the device control the charging process. It works just fine, doesn’t weigh much and comes with a storage bag. It has the usual safety features (eg: undervoltage, high temp, overload, etc) that you expect in a decent charger. Nothing exciting but will do the job just fine. Recommended!

I was hoping for a very nice product given the cost difference between this and other chargers. There are too major things wrong with the charger. First, to attach to a normal 120 V outlet, you have to use an extension piece, which make it come out from the wall quite a ways. Second, and more importantly, I could not for the life me figure out how to remove the charger from the mounting bracket to mount it, and there are no instructions provided.

I have used Battery Tender® products with great results for many years and have complete trust in the brand and product.

When I saw that they now have a Level 1 EV charger for 120V outlets, I had to order it to see if it would solve a very annoying problem with an upscale European hybrid vehicle.

Here in the Phoenix summer, evening garage temperatures can exceed 120°F on some days, and typically hover around 110°F most days. The “factory” original equipment Level 1 charger that came with the vehicle cannot operate reliably at those temperatures. Consistently, when the hot car is parked in the hot garage even if waiting for a couple of hours for things to cool, the factory charger would consistently charge for only 5 to 10 minutes before flashing its red warning LED that signals a failure to keep charging.

Discussions with the dealer revealed that this is a “known” problem, with no foreseeable resolution from the factory despite the vehicle still being under warranty. So, as a solution, I tried this Deltran Battery Tender® charger instead.

Having only a 15A outlet in the garage, the instructions require setting the Battery Tender® to its 13 Amp level, (which is virtually the same output as the factory charger) and just plugging it into the standard J1772 vehicle charge plug. Reliably, the Battery Tender® charger finished the overnight charge with no errors and in the same amount of time that the factory charger uses when it works in the cooler weather.

Additionally, this charger comes with a convenient nylon carry bag, making it easy to take along on a trip allowing you to charge anywhere that a 120V standard outlet is available. In the event that the outlet is a qualified 20A one, this charger can even deliver up to 16 Amps, speeding the charging process by about 20%. The charger comes with the right plug for a 20A outlet and an adapter for the 15A one.

Now, being a hybrid, if one cannot charge the battery, the car can just be driven on its gasoline engine and still work fine, but over a year of ownership, that extra range offered by the hybrid battery significantly improves fuel consumption. This fuel cost savings is noticeable and there is the resultant benefit to both the wallet and the environment.
