This vehicle was intermittantly not starting with the ignition key and the security light would flash. Leaving the key in the ignition for 10 minutes with the igniton on would reset the security light and it would ~usually~ start. I ordered this part to hopefully fix the problem – and it did!
Installation was pretty straight forward. Here is how I went about it – but you may find better instructions on youtube or other places on the internet. You’re going to need an 8mm wrench (for battery connection), a small screwdriver or allen wrench(for igntion lock tab), trim pannel removal tools or a screwdriver etc for the trim pannels, a 7mm socket/rachet for the radio screws, and about 30 minutes of time to do this.
Unhook battery. Remove plastic ‘ring’ around ignition switch. Remove radio/heater control trim pannel. Remove connectors to the TCS and the hazard switches at the top of the trim pannel. Place pannel out of the way. Remove three 7mm screws holding in radio. Once radio was out you can access the backside of the igniton switch. Insert igniton key and turn to the start position and hold it there. On the side facing the radio there is a square recess about 1/4 inch or so in size – use a small screwdriver or allen wrench to push in the square locking tab of the old cylinder. (at this point you’ll have one hand in the radio mounting recess pushing the locking tab and the other hand holding the ignition key in the start position. Once you have depressed the locking tab, gently pull out on the ignition key and the ignition cylinder will come out. Now for the install. Put the new key in the new ignition cylinder. Turn the key to the start position and observe the position of the part that is opposite the key end – it will be a sort of rectangle shape – this is what engages into the switch body in the dash. You need to have the switch body in the same position so the cylinder will engage the switch properly. When I installed mine the ‘recepticle’ in the switch body had turned slightly when i removed the ignition cylinder so you can just poke a finger in to the switch body and turn the recepticle part a little at a time until it lines up with the ignition cylinder. Push the ignition cylinder into the switch gently – if it doesnt fully seat remove the cylinder and check the ‘timing’ of the switch and the cylinder rectangle – adjust the switch body recepticle as needed. Once it lines up the cylinder will click right into place with little effort needed – if its not lined up right the cylinder will be protruding out about 1/2 from the dash. Reinstall the radio and the electrical connectors / radio trim plate. Last install the trim ring around the ignition switch. Then make sure the key is turned off and reconnect the battery. Try to start the car – if it doesnt start and the security light starts flashing you need to leave the key in the on position for about 10 minutes until the security light quits blinking. Once it quits blinking attempt to start again and it should go now.
This vehicle also has a viper remote start on it and after the reprogramming the remote start worked just fine.
A couple of other notes my switch came with Chevrolet branded keys(this car is a pontiac not a big deal to me but just thought i’d share it). Your original key will most likely not be the same cut as the new keys – so in my case I have the original key for the trunk and door and the new keys just for the ignition. Since it has remote locks/trunk release I usually didnt use the key in the door or trunk anyway so it worked out just fine.
overall a great product that has so far solved the intermittant security start issue!

UPDATE AS OF 2/19/2016: THE THEFT LIGHT FINALLY TURNED ITSELF OFF! 9 months after replacing this unit, the light finally turned itself off! A forum online stated that if you get a unit with the same exact code as your vehicle (pure coincidence) that it could take up to 300 starts before the light reset again and stays off. So there you have it! This fixed the no start condition perfectly and the light turned itself off! No reprogramming necessary! Fell in love with this product all over again!

Changed out in 2003 Chevy Malibu along with a new ignition switch. The code on this item matched the code on my car so I was unable to do the relearn procedure. My car starts every time now, but the security light is on 24/7 instead of flashing and keeping my car from starting like before. I would recommend ordering 2 to give yourself a chance at doing the relearn procedure that will keep the light off. You can always return the excess free of charge to Amazon.

My Grand Am was having the problem with the ignition and passlock system that a lot of people have. It was obnoxious at first, but it actually progressed to the point that it was shorting the electrical system to a degree. It was getting undriveable.
After some googling, it seems a lot of people have paid several hundred dollars to get this fixed with a mechanic. Kind of silly for something that’s clearly a factory issue. So, I took a gamble here and decided to get it done myself.
I was a little thrown off at first because the initial picture (since updated on the item itself) was of a Pontiac key and the one I received was a Chevrolet. I took off a star because I specifically purchased this key according to the fit and photo, and the current photo has carefully blurred the key too far to tell what brand it is (though it appears closest to Chevrolet). It doesn’t affect the usability of the part at all, but it is kind of shady. I was a little nervous seeing this, but it fit in just fine and the car is back to normal.
I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am SE2 for anyone looking for a part for the same vehicle.

Perfect! After calling around to the local stores for this ignition, I decided to do a quick Amazon search, and boy am I glad I did. It was easily $100 less than any I found in my area and arrived on time the next day. The guide included could have been a been a bit more detailed, but a quick Google search fixed that. Installation took less than an hour and it works great. I’ll update it it gives me any issues, but it’s been one week after install and were fine so far! 24 hours and less than $40 later and I’m back in the road.

I was too lazy to replace the part and lived with the problem until car wouldn’t start and I had to have car towed home.
Great part so far. Installed in 15 minutes. After the relearn procedure, car started right up. Cylinder feels tight and the key fits in tight and I don’t anticipate any problem. TOTALLY WORTH $22!!
This is Passlock and the internet describes several ways to do the relearn procedure however this is what worked for me:
1. Turn key to on and then try to start the car. (It won’t) Security light will flash and then go steady and then go out. This takes 10 minutes.
2. Turn key off and wait 10 seconds.
3. Do steps 1 and 2 three times.
After you turn the key off after the third sequence it should start. (Mine did)
Some procedures have you just turn the key to ON, wait 10 minutes and then turn it off and wait 10 secs and repeat. This did not work for me. I had to turn the key and try to start the engine as part of the relearn procedure.
I hope this helps. It’s fairly easy to replace and there is a great video on how to do it online.

Product is a direct replacement for OEM. Instructions were east to follow. You end up with a key for ignition and the original key for doors. Saved me money and works great
