This is the rail cleaner most used by enthusiasts & model railroad clubs !

I clean my track and wheels with makeup swabs (shed fewer fibers than regular cotton swabs and don’t shred) first running along the track with a swab dipped in this stuff, followed by a clean dry swab to remove filth, followed by another clean swab to remove excess cleaner until track shines and is “squeaky” clean. Uses a lot of swabs as they are discarded when they turn black. Between these cleanings (like before/after running trains) just using a clean swab will remove buildup. I noticed after a few cleanings, the rail needs to be cleaned less often, it must be conditioning the rail somewhat. Also cleans wheels well with similar dirt-resistant results. Disregard any of this if excess residue is not polished with a dry swab, it will attract residues. Cleaning it off with alcohol defeats the point so if you want to do that don’t even bother buying this product, it’s basically just kerosene anyway.

My N Scale train layout has lots of tunnels and hard to reach track. I wanted a cleaner that removes buildup, doesn’t leave a slippery film, and can be used with a track cleaning car. I use this with the CMX Clean Machine and the Tidy Track Rail Tracker and it is absolutely perfect. My trains run smooth as glass.
A note on the reason for this particular cleaning fluid – normally I have used Isopropyl Alcohol, and of course during the pandemic this has been needed for other more important things and has become more expensive. Isopropyl Alcohol also contains a significant amount of water, and is what chemists call “polar”. This polar characteristic is bad for track cleaning, because it tends to attract dirt and accelerate oxidation. This track cleaning fluid in, in contrast, “non-polar”, so it avoids this issue. It leaves a very fine coat of protection that inhibits oxidation. I have noticed that my trains run smoothly for about twice as long as with alcohol.
Another great facet of this cleaner is that it isn’t slippery and will not diminish traction. My layout has significant grades, and immediately after applying this cleaner there is no wheel slip.
The cost is marginally more than some other cleaners, but I have cleaned my entire layout a few times now, using the CMX Clean Machine, with about an ounce of it. So roughly speaking I’ll go through a bottle of this per year or so.

The trains were a bit sluggish and would often start and then stop. I decided to try this rail cleaner and it works great. Everything runs nice and smooth now just like it should.

This stuff cleans the track very well, but if you have a steep grade on your layout, you will need to clean the track with alcohol after applying. Despite what they say, it leaves the track somewhat slippery. Regarding the conductivity of this stuff: I measured the conductivity and it’s resistance is over 20 megohms, which is non-conductive in my book. Not too impressed with results on my HO train layout.
