This is a perfect replacement for my ’11 WRX STI. The Dealership wanted $28 + tax for o.e.m. air filter. At $ 16 delivered you can almost buy two filters for the price of one. At first I hesitated going with an aftermarket filter because I was unsure how it might affect maf scaling on my car. I am protuned Stage 2 with a stock airbox and I religiously monitor/log my car with romraider. Yesterday after I replaced the air filter I went for a drive and watched my AF corrections and fuel trims. There was no noticeable difference in CL fueling. I will do some w.o.t. pulls today to make sure that the air flow isn’t affected at higher ranges.

I ran this filter in my Subaru for 25,000 km. I inspected the airbox recently and found quite a lot of dust on the clean side of the airbox. Looking at the depressed areas of the seal around the outside of the filter, I could tell that only a small amount of the seal was making contact with the mounting face of the airbox on two edges. Some areas of the fabric seal are discolored, as if dirty air had been passing by them.
I measured the AC Delco filter and it is about 5-6mm shorter than the OEM Subaru Denso filter in the vertical direction. The plastic frame on the AC Delco is also much less rigid than the OEM filter. Taking a straight edge to the plastic frame, it is clear that the plastic frame does not run very straight. The surface is warped either inward or outward, both on the sealing face and around the edges of it, sometimes by more than a millimeter. This is more noticeable on the used AC Delco filter than on the new AC Delco filter I purchased to replace it. The Subaru airbox design makes it difficult to see how well all edges are aligned, so using a properly sized filter is very important.
I now have an engine that has been eating a lot more dust than it should have been for the past 25,000 km and probably has some pretty advanced engine wear as a result. I’ve heard of other filters from reputable brands that have fitment issues on Subarus as well. I’ll pay the extra $10 for the OEM air filters from now on.

This unit seems to be well built and kind of fits. The OEM version is about 3/16 to 1/4 inch longer and fits real snug in the cavity. This one is sloppy and if not installed just right will let foul air around it. The paper is a bit thinner too. I am not sure I’ll buy again even though if care is taken in the installation it seals and won’t move. I would have preferred it to be an exact match in size with the OEM.

I installed this in a 2007 Subaru Outback. Of all the filters offered by Amazon sellers, for some reason this one caught my eye. It was neither the cheapest, nor the most expensive; perhaps the AC Delco brand (though it was made in Korea) caught my eye. The thought of installing a part from a supplier once closely aligned with GM, spawned by Albert Champion of spark plug fame, but with manufacturing now outsourced to Korea, in a car made in the United States by a Japanese company in which GM once held a chunk of stock and a board position, compelled me to make the purchase, along with a Champion branded air filter made in China. Back to the filter…it looked much like every other brand of engine air filter I have used in this car; pleated fabric in a plastic holder with felt-like material on the outside of the flange. It felt substantial, fit into the air cleaner plenum very nicely, and the newly clean air gave my engine the power of a V8 (well, the last part may be an overstatement, but the rest is true).
