Direct fit and works like it should. I was worried about ordering aftermarket due to numerous complaints of failed mounting hardware / main bolt failure. Went with AC DELCO due to reputation. All is good (1) month in.

The tensioner fits fine, but the bottom part where the design of hydraulic spring is different than the OEM as well as the picture that amazon provided.

Item pictured is NOT the item you get, and it would not fit. The little compression piston as pictured would fit, but the one that was sent does not have the relief, and would interfere. See picture for a side by side comparison. To make it fit, I had to reuse the old piston.

Despite another review about the delivered product not matching the one in the photo I went ahead and ordered anyway thinking any issues would have been resolved. This is not the case. There’s a picture provided by one of the reviewers and the tensioner I ordered and received in December 2018 is exactly like the one on the right of that photo. It doesn’t have an indentation on the plastic hydraulic spring cover, which makes it not fit the 2009-2011 Pilot. It may fit other models but due to the layout there’s not enough room for clearance on the Pilot.

On the positive side this tensioner is identical — right down to the casting numbers to the stock unit. The problem is it is made with soft metal and if you do not load the tension with a 6 point socket it will round off the bolt you use to load and unload the tensioner. Very annoying. The problem is the design of the tensioner and the way it is installed. Part of this fault lies with Honda as I am at a loss as to why they didn’t just keep the simple one they had on the pre-2009 Pilots. Again — important — Installing this tensioner requires that you use a 6 point socket and make sure it is square to the bolt. It requires a considerable amount of torque to remove and install the belt. I had a 3 foot breaker bar and it was still difficult. I rounded off the top and bottom bolt trying to re-install. Ended up taking the rollers off this unit and installed them on the stock unit and installed it with a 6-point socket.

When I first looked at the original part installed there is a step in the top of the tensioner damper which is designed to fit around a protrusion of the timing cover. At first look it appears that the AC Delco replacement unit will interfere with the timing cover and not fit. But, I figured, what the heck, I have the car up in the air, I’ll install it and see what happens. Guess what, IT FITs! Apparently the AC Delco part must have slightly different geometry that the OEM unit, so the boot area of the damper does clear the timing case cover. Albeit, just barely. Bolted in position without being tensioned the boot clears the case by a hair. Once tensioned and in its running position it clears by a 1mm or so. I think the comments about it not fitting are from purchasers that visualized it only and did not actually install it. Just order it and install it, it should be fine. Even if the boot should touch it will not be an issue. I’ve been turning wrenches for 40 years both professionally and personally and it’s pretty unusual that an OEM replacement part by a quality manufacturer does not fit. But from cheaper Chinese manufacturers I have seen fitment problems.
