I should have known that I’d end up going down a rabbit hole with this project. I have a Lexus GX470 that I replaced the DRL with LED’s a few years ago because the incandescent amber DRL’s were only lasting about 18 months before they burned out. The Amber LED’s are great but you have to splice wires and put a resistor in line to stop them from hyper flashing. I did the resistors on the front, but my experience with the resistors is that they generate a lot of heat (I mean they will burn you if your touch them because they are running continuously with the DRL’s on). I didn’t want to have to splice into my rear turn signal wires and tuck a resistor in back there. So I’m still running incandescent bulbs in the rear. I though that if I got this flasher relay I could run LED’s in all four corners and eliminate the resistors up front. Of course, my first step in locating the relay is YouTube. A gentleman named Jamie Andrews has put together an excellent tutorial on what is required to install a relay like this in a GX470. First, you will need an adapter harness Toyota (82241-35010) then you will need to relocate one of the pins on that harness to keep your 4 way hazard flasher functionality. Then there is a lot of dash removal require to get access to the OEM relay. Additionally, I think (but not 100% sure) that you will lose the DRL capability. In the end, I am going to shelve using this product because the juice isn’t worth the squeeze on the GX470. The 3 star rating is not an indictment of this actual product, rather it is because the advertisement insinuates that this is a drop in replacement for the flasher relay on the Lexus GX470. It’s not even close. If you have your heart set on upgrading the lights in your GX470 watch Mr. Andrews YouTube video so that you are fully informed before starting this project. In the end, between LED’s that burn out because they aren’t designed to handle the constant heat from being run as DRL’s, and the fact that the resistors burn out after a couple of years, what started as a project to increase the reliability of the DRL / Turn signals, has really turned into having to constantly fix or replace something.
