I used this product based on a guide I found on the internet for restoring old steel basement windows. Removed windows from the frame, use a wire brush to get the loose rust and paint off then used Ospho with a sponge brush to brush on to the rust window frame. This product goes on very much like water & a little goes a long way. I put some in a small plastic cup and used a sponge brush to apply to the metal then let it sit overnight. It converts the rust to iron phosphate which is inert and creates kind of a skin over the metal so it won’t continue to rust.

Keep in mind that this converts existing rust but it won’t prevent future rust. After using the product I washed it down with some mineral spirits to remove any excess (it can get tacky) and then primed & painted with Zinsser primer & Rustoleum metal paint. 2 months on and the windows still look great, no flaking of paint or rust bleed through.

Worked well neutralizing the rust on a welding cart I was refurbishing. Follow instructions and wear protective gear.

This is my second purchase. This product works great

This stuff is nasty. But it works extremely well. Don’t get it on your skin or eyes. There’s not really a whole lot to say about it it’s awful and it works well

I used this while restoring my 1957 Cadillac, I stripped all the paint off the body panels and applied this product to convert all the patches and pin spots of rust I had. Being a first time user and having absolutely no idea what to expect from this product, I learned a few things the hard way.

First – I started to apply this using a small paint brush- I dumped the Ospho out onto the trunk of the car and started to brush it out smooth. This made streaks and uneven application along with drips everywhere. I realized this was going to be a problem so I then poured some Ospho out onto a sponge and applied it in a nice, thin, even layer thereafter. Any drips or spots where the coating is uneven will leave you with a horrible surface to paint over if you’re looking for a smooth finish in the end. I had to sand down some areas to get rid of ridges and dried drops so I could have a smooth, flat surface to paint over.

Secondly, make sure the Ospho has dried for the full day! I didn’t fully listen to the “24 hour minimum” drying time and took my chances: I applied the Ospho and let the car sit over night. In the morning I somehow had some drip sized spots of surface rust in some spots so I sponged some more Ospho over these spots and let the car sit in the Florida sun. The original coating of Ospho from the day before was about 22 hours in and dry, the touch up spots to get rid of the surface rust were about 3 hours and felt dry from the sun so I shot some primer on the car. The next day, the spots that I only gave 3 hours to dry were bubbled up so I had to do it over, the spots that were ~22 hours dry were fine. Thankfully this was only the trunk area that I experimented with so it wasn’t much to fix and do over

So, after my little crash course using Ospho, the rest of the car went smoothly and I am confident I will have no rust issues for a very long time. I shot self-etching primer over the Ospho and it grabbed just fine, I shot urethane primer over the self-etching primer to gave myself a good base for a one stage urethane top coat.

Have been using Corroseal rust converter for years but it is is hard to cover with a finish (paint) once applied, so I decided to try Ospho based on reviews. Ospho is generally effective and more economical than some of the other rust converters, and importantly can be readily painted over if item is properly prepped as directed.

However, as the title states. Ospho is slower to react than Corroseal, and maybe less reactive too. Several areas on my project (enamel painted ocean mist exposed outdoor furniture that had rust breaking through) still had some orange rust as the margins where the enamel paint was not as compromised. I am certain those areas were well coated with Ospho and allowed to dry 24-hours. Conversely, Corroseal immediately turns everything remotely rusty black, good and bad.

This stuff is GREAT!!! I have been testing different products such as Rustoleum Gel, Evaporust, Etc. For the past year… I ran into this product by accident and saw some of the reviews here. I must say, without having to prep anything, this stuff works great! I have an F150, and if you know about cars, these things rust faster than the average vehicle (especially when you offroad…) I only used half of this bottle underneath the passenger side of the truck and it removed 80% of the HEAVY rust in 24 hours. I just bought the whole gallon and I will be sanding and spraying the whole frame of the truck. I do believe this product can get rid of 99.9% of the rust when doing the proper prep. Highly recommended! ALSO, PLEASE HAVE IN MIND… THIS STUFF HAS A STRONG SMELL, SO IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA OR OTHER RESPIRATORY ISSUES, PLEASE USE IT IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA AND WEAR LONG SLEEVES, GOGGLES, MASK, ETC. PROTECT YOUR DRIVEWAY ASWELL!
