Do not order!!! not only did i have to wait 3 weeks for deliver but instead of getting the 5 pc clear 80 amp relays that i ordered they send me 1 40 amp black cheap relay. SMH. bad business.

  2. Theman & GF

These five relays and sockets, with pig tail wires, came in a bag – I appreciate that there is minimal packaging to go to land fill.

The relays themselves are clear, and have a small green LED inside that indicates when voltage is applied to the coil. This is excellent for trouble shooting; in my application the fuse panel is up behind the dashboard, having the LED go on when the circuit is active is a good feature.

The relays are well sealed, with a material that appears to be epoxy sealing the outer casing to the base, as well as sealing each connector blade at the base – no moisture should be able to enter the relay – this is a great benefit in an automotive application (my existing name brand relays that failed did not have this feature).

These are industry standard pin out, possibly the most common relay used in cars over the years. With this said if you are using these to replace existing relays be sure to confirm the pin out. If you are using these to add a relay then you would use the provided sockets, and they use colour coded wires.

The sockets are average quality, with plated connectors in a non sealed socket. The pig tail lengths are sufficient to splice in to your application, with the insulation pre-stripped to ease with soldering or otherwise connecting them to your wiring.

    Overall Verdict?

They function well, are well sealed and have the added benefit of an indicator LED. Great value, I recommend this product.

  3. Theman & GF

Overall, they function as they should, and it wouldn’t bother me to use them to 30A. I’d only recommend them as a budget option, or if you are looking for something with visual confirmation, aesthetic reasons, or as a training aid for the clear case. See below for in depth.

First off, these are not rated for 30A. A standard Bosch 5 pin relay will be rated for 30A, however it is common for competitors to rate theirs to 40. Anything truly over 40 or 50A will have oversized spades on it. Furthermore the included harness/plugs are wired with 16awg (1.5mm) wire, which even in automotive is rarely used to 20A, let alone 80. The trigger wires are smaller at 0.75mm. All wires are stranded and have the ends pre-stripped for you.

I do like the clear case and LED for diagnostic/information purposes, and depending on the install it could look quite sharp.

If you wire 86 (yellow) to positive and 85 ( white) to negative then the relay closes and the LED comes on. If you wire it backwards then the LED only flickers as it shuts off. I don’t believe the LED is acting as any sort of a “quenching diode” to prevent voltage spikes, so if that’s something you need you’d likely want to install it yourself (ie if it’s being controlled by a microcontroller and not a switch). For those that don’t know, pin 30 (black) will join with 87 (Red) when 85/86 are energized and will be joined with 87a (blue) when there is no power.

The relay does a “soft” close at about 6V, but does a full close at 10. At 12V it makes a nice click, however not what I’d expect for “80A” either. My variable power supply goes to 24.5 and everything worked as it should without magic smoke.

The mounting clip holds tightly, however I can also pull it out by hand without tools (which allows you to use it within a fuse box for example). I don’t think anything in it is high quality, either the relay case, harness or the wires.

They do have provisions to lock into one another and join tightly for cleaner installs.

Having used 100s of 5 pin relays in my life and getting a lot from Amazon, I can say there are lots of great 5 or 6 pack relay options out there that include the plugs/harnesses in the $30 price range. Some have fuses built in, have clear cases, or are more standard. If these are what you are after, are priced competitively and you are only using them to 30A, I’d recommend them and may even purchase more myself.
