Bought these for a 2003 Dodge Durango. Used a lift support tool to hold the strut rod at the highest point so I could remove the old support. Also had a helper hold up that portion of the tailgate. You need a #40 torx head to remove and replace. Got ‘em replaced in minutes; however, I may have stripped one bottom bolt on the right lift support. (It’s really critical to make sure the torx bolts go in straight and not canted or you risk stripping the threads! That’s where a helper comes in…to hold/jiggle the tailgate up to prevent stress on the bolt you’re screwing in. So even though I may have stripped one bolt, it works…that lift support has about a 1/8″ wiggle but still functions ok. (The other rod is solid, no wiggle.)

Initially they seemed to function properly, and lasted for a little over a month until one day we opened the hatch and one of them broke right off at the end. There was no unusual usage or anything being done out of the ordinary when it happen. It just broke.

To be honest I did not expect much but I was pleasantly impressed with the quality and ease of installation. These are better than the original equipment ones. It takes both hands to close the gate now and when you open the gate you will have to hold it back it opens with such force. I love it.

These arrived on time and appeared to be great quality. It was a tight fit to install them, but at no fault of the product. I have had them on the truck and open and close the rear door daily and they work great.

03 dodge Durango 5.9l hatch. Perfect fit.
Old ones didn’t stay open when it was cold, and door was heavy to lift.
These ones the door could knock you back they work so well.
Tools required: drill, torx screw driver or 1/4 socket torx, wratchet strap, possibly a tap. Long stick or 2×4 cut to length to hold door open.
Wratchet strap wrapped around rod keeps it from expanding when unscrewing, preventing it from stripping out the threads. You also use the strap to compress the new rod so you can line the holes up. I’ve done this to compress new shocks as well.
I stripped one of the holes, so had to buy the tap to chase the threads. Took me 3 hours, and 2 trips to auto store for torx bit and one for tap when one hole cross threaded.

These are more than adequate for my Durango. The toughest thing was it took two people to install as they were fully extended and I needed to compress some to install. Glad they are as stiff as they are. I would buy them again.

First off, I scoured the reviews before I made this purchase, so I had an idea what I was getting into. Second, the vast majority of them are spot on, from both ends of the spectrum.
The good:
Once installed, these things work fantastic! I only ended up replacing one of them because they are so strong. It holds the hatch up great and it even fully opens the hatch with no hesitation as soon and you start to lift it up. So now I have a spare one in case this one goes bad or anything like that.
The bad:
The included hardware could use to have a little detail put into it to make it fully functional. I had to take the washer/spacer off the original lift support and put it on the new one.
The lift support is a bit difficult to install. The threads do match up, if you take your time and don’t just power through screwing them in, they will go in fine. The angles of the bolts in the end of the lift support are a bit off from what they would need to be to make this a smooth install. I had to put the top bolt in first and then slightly tweak the lift support to be able to install the bottom bolt. I do t think you would be able to get the top one to go in straight if you install the bottoms one first, and that my be where some of the other reviewers were running into issues with the jolt stripping or cross threading.
Overall, I am happy with this purchase. I have hit my head and almost slammed my hand/fingers in the hatch so man times, I was willing to put a bit of work and risk into this purchase. If you are willing to go slow, and pay attention to how this all goes together so you don’t screw up the bolts, this is a great solution to get these replaced for a much better price than going the OEM route and having someone else install them, and I would recommend these.
