Probably this is one of the best parts about masking–especially when you get proficient at it. Face it, no one really wants to mask but we must to protect work areas and reduce cleanup time and cost. It will still take some time with this or any device, but this device sure makes it go much faster and is much less frustrating.

With proper understanding and practice this tool is actually a breeze to use and enjoyable when you compare it to the ordinary mess of willy nilly hanging plastic with tape and scissors (assuming you can even find a sharp pair). I can tape off a kitchen in 5-minutes and have texture, paint…whatever flying in minutes thereafter. The fold-down-to-draping sheets are wonderful and with the variety of sizes, you can’t go wrong. Just make sure you have enough of everything including proper length. Frankly, I enjoy reaching for this system, and so glad I have it. In fact, ruin something just once–or get things mucked up enough that it’s difficult to clean–and you’ll wish you didn’t. Improper or inadequate masking still can waste A LOT of time and money, so focus and do it right. Alternatively, not masking is negligent and right up there with not puting down Ram Board to protect delicate flooring during construction–foolish and/or a BIG rookie mistake.

While this is not an effective means for dust control (like drywall, etc.), it’s great for quick protection with wet-goods like paint and spray/slap texture. Understand this plastic is not very strong at all, so bulls and gorillas on your jobsite should steer clear of it. It’s meant to be lightweight, inexpensive, and convenient temporary cover, and it does this very well/cost-effectively. Just remember not to leave the tape on too long. If you do, wet it with warm water like with a plant misting bottle. Give it a few minutes to soak and then remove it effortlessly. Dried stuck-on paint and/or texture combined with tape on too long can cause tears or other damage, so wet it well even with a hot, wet rag if nothing else available.

Holy Smokes, what a difference this tool has made for me and painting. Having the handmasker has saved me a ton of time, and has made my painting more precise and with fewer mistakes which saves me time. Being able to swap out different loadouts of plastic drops or paper is an awesome capability to have for when your painting needs change.

with this masker i was able to perfectly mask around windows and doors! the 3m plastic film works amazing, it held up for 3-4 days in moderate breeze and rain!

This thing works great. The very first thing you need to do when you get this product is to remove the plastic blade guard. It literally and easily just tears away. If you don’t remove it you’ll have a VERY difficult time making any clean or square cuts. Also, don’t try to use this masker to closely abut any painting edges. Instead, lay down 1.5-2.0 inch masking tape around the edges and THEN use the masker to cover the surface you want to protect. Much easier. Hope this helps

This thing is awesome! Saves me a lot of time masking. The films are strong. You do need to tape the other three edges down. I use 3M’s TA20 Hand-Masker 3M TA20 Hand-Masker Tape Applicator 6.5 x 5.7 x 2.7-Inch for that…that tool is also awesome.

The cut off knife takes a little getting used to. At first it was very very frustrating. Then I did some research and looked at videos of others using it. You need to rotate the machine all the way to the back and then pull hard to the right [pretty hard] ONLY THEN will it cut the tape and the film in one go…it really does ! The plastic knife protector needs to bend backwards to expose the knife. My knife has a serrated blade [for plastic film] Once you get the hang of it…everything is cool!

Changing the film does waste a little bit of film since once the tape sticks to the film….it is almost impossible to take it off. But only around 6″ to 12″ of film gets trashed….no big deal.

The included DVD does not have any instructions on it. It has a short video which is an advertisement of this product.

I am using it to paint/mask a fixer-upper townhouse. I am spraying the interior. So far I really like it.

Takes some getting used to but once you have the technique down, prep goes much more quickly. If you have a vaulted ceiling where the ceiling approaches the wall at an acute angle, you can’t run the masker along the wall as the masker will contact the ceiling. Here you’ll have to tear the film off by hand and apply. But for regular right angle ceiling and walls it works pretty well.

You have to watch how the masking tape applies to the film as you use the masker, part of the technique. It can be a little tricky but on the whole, it makes it easier. Just wish it had a way to hang from a tool belt or something.
