I use it anytime a fill is needed over 1/4 inch deep vs a Bondo product. Sand down with coarse grit and apply. Here’s the secret with this stuff. Buy a Stanly Shurform Shaver, mix the Marglass with hardner and apply, keep some material on scrape cardboard and keep a close eye on the material setting up. Once it becomes firm and not jiggly but still takes a fingernail into it, start hitting it with the Shaver. You have about a 2 to 3 minute window depending on how much hardener you used and the temperature and how thick you applied it as it creates its own heat from thermo mass ( don’t use it under 50 degrees and don’t apply heat as it will harden from the outside in making it impossible to shave). If you shave too soon it will tear up the Marglass and clog the shaver. Start too late and the Marglass will not shave. I never sand Marglass as you’ll need 36 grit sander and the green dust goes everywhere and it’s itchy. You can shape it perfectly by over-applying and get it to exactly where you want it. It’s very hard to lay it out as the fibers pull it making a nice spread difficult. Just blob it on with no air bubbles trapped and time it and hit it hard and fast at the right timing. You may want to practice with a sample to get a feel for it. This stuff is tough, water-proof and strong. Once shaped, top over with a sanding filler like Evercoat formula 27 or your favorite bondo product. BTW you can shave Bondo products the same way. Bondo shrinks 2% over the course of a year and should never be applied thicker than 1/4 inch. You can buy replacement blades for the Shaver but be sure not to put the blade on backwards, it should cut when pulling not pushing as it can go on both ways. I like Evercoat 27 as it is a high-density marine filler vs low-density water asborbing Bondo. It can also be used with fibreglass cloth to bridge a hole. Just cut your cloth and spread Marglass into the cloth starting in the middle and pull to the end, the reverse to the other side or the cloth will bunch up. Force the Marglass into the cloth and pick up one end, lay over the hole and pat it to the surface and you’ll see the green color come thru. As it starts to set up you can trim it with a razor blade to clean off any cloth fingers sticking up. Once the bridge is hard you can apply more to give it some extra strength. I usually will create a depression for a bridge repair so I can apply more and not have it hump up. Be sure to use my advise for shaving it.
