I spent some time searching for this starter for a 12.5 hp DR Field and Brush Mower. DR wanted $275.00, found it here and saved over $200. It arrived quickly and after installing it, the mower started like new and is still running perfect. So far I could only call it a quality part and would recommend it to anyone.

This starter bolted right into place. I’m on my second one after the last one seemed to have a bearing fail leading to teeth skipping. I installed this one, and my mower fired right up. I used it to mow, and then put it away. I went to fire it up and the teeth skip upon every time combustion happens so it does not fire up. Just makes the awful noise of a tooth skipping. If I buy two and both are fails I am going to call it what it is and say this is not a suitable replacement. I did ensure the bolts were tight and the mating surface is firmly against the other. I’m going to try and remove a few thousandths from the mating surface to see if I can get away with at least a little more use before it ends up in the trash with the last one I bought. Definitely will be buying original equipment when purchasing my next starter.
Update:
After removing some material from the mating surface I had better luck with the bendix making good contact with the flywheel, but that only lasted a couple days before the bearing slop got worse. It will no longer start using this starter.

Works and installed just like original equipment on old Murray lawn tractor but protective cap on shaft came off within first try.
Update 5-5-13, after about 10 uses shaft sheared completely off.

I am not one to review each and every purchase and especially if the product did as expected w/o issues etc. Only to warn others from making a mistake of purchasing a product or in dealing with poor service or shipping hold ups AT THE SELLERS STORE (not in the hands of say fed-x which I will not get into) But I feel inclined to take the time from my back logged work load to give the guys at “DISCOUNT” props for their high quality service and products . Starter came sealed in plastic inside a well protected box . Inside the sealed bag was a couple of bags of silicon to protect from surface rust AND more importantly a TEST SPEC SHEET as a graph with testing info , date and tester number .Very impressive , I build for race teams and am always getting parts shipped , very expensive for road racing type quality parts , only few of those have certifications of testing and HARDLY ANY have the test specifications on a graph so spikes and drops can be seen.
The proof is in the pudding ….. despite all the glam of test sheets nice pretty boxes and quality packaging the starters are well built and the one I ordered was 100% new even the cast housing . But the best is yet to come …THEY BACK UP THESE UNITS 100% !! which could be the very best thing about DISCOUNT STARTER & ALTERNATOR . The world is not perfect , this is why we have the need for replacement parts and even those of the highest quality and close attention to manufacturing techniques can and will have some that “slip through” quality checks and we as customers end up installing . To have the guys at Discount with their attention to customer service allows me to feel inclined to take this much time to write and assure anyone & everyone to not waste any more time reading reviews to aid in making a choice of whom to purchase from . I will stake my reputation on the guys (and ladies?) OF THIS CO. TO PROVIDE YOU WITH A QUALITY UNIT & BACK IT UP WITH SERVICE THAT IMPRESSES ME.. back to work I go ………

Fit fine though I had to use the original bolt as the one that came with the starter was too small. No problems since the old starter had seized but the bolt was fine. Been working fine for over a month so seems solid.
