Don’t buy because when this muffler wears out there is no way to get any warranty because Amazon will not help you after the 90 day free trial offer and Dynomax website tells you to return it to your retailer that you got it at Dynomax also doesn’t have a number you can call. Amazon and Dynomax are just passing the question about warranty back and fore leaving you with nothing but a worn out noisy muffler stay far away from buying this type of muffler by Dynomax on Amazon because neither one will do anything for you.

I’ve been using these mufflers for years, and I have always found that they provide a much more pleasing sound than straight-through mufflers. Both from the standpoints of sound quality and sound pressure (decibels).
In most instances, just the muffler alone is perfect. In a couple situations where, for example a finicky, intolerant wife might frequently be a passenger, the addition of a basic glasspack resonator ahead of the muffler has always ‘muffled’ the complaints without ruining the good sound.

I put together a $300 header-back exhaust system for my 4.0L 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I used this Dynomax Super Turbo because I wanted to achieve a mild sound that carried a small amount of throat hidden in the background. With this muffler, I can’t tell the difference between the factory muffler until I walk behind the vehicle, then you hear the slight tone of an old gasoline pickup truck. It’s muted, but there is a little bit of throat to it. It is exactly what I was looking for. The interior noise is so low, that it is not worthy of mentioning. No interior drone.
If you are putting together a system, the first thing I would recommend to you is the Bosal downpipe from Autozone. I was most impressed with the build quality of this part over any other part I used. It has a better appearance than the Walker down pipe. It doesn’t have all of the crinkle bends that the Walker has.
The next recommendation I would give to you is the Nickson band clamps that I bought at O’Reilly Auto Parts. Band clamps usually run about $10-$15 each. At O’Reilly they were $5-$6 each. Band clamps are nice because they hold the exhaust system together without deforming the exhaust pipe as badly as the typical U shaped (guillotine) clamps do. This helps you in the event that you might need to dismantle your exhaust system to remove your transmission in the future.
The most notable part that I purchased was the tailpipe. There wasn’t anything particularly special about the pipe itself, other than the fact that it was only $17.55, and ***most importantly***, I used a (Walker 45944) tailpipe that was for a 1986-1992 jeep XJ Cherokee. It was a typical Walker part, so it had crinkle bends all over it. The thing I liked about it was that it had the normal exhaust hanger that every Cherokee uses behind the muffler, but it didn’t have the horizontal bar hanging off of it towards the rear-end of the vehicle. My jeep uses the hoop-strap style exhaust hanger. I did not need the bar to mount mine, but the walker tailpipe for my 1999 xj had a dumb little bar welded to it that I would have to cut off. Additionally, I knew that I was going to be cutting it flush with my leaf spring in the rear and putting a turndown on it (see picture), so I didn’t want any interference from the unused hanger that was welded on.
Other than that, i was impressed by how easy it was to cut the exhaust pipe with the exhaust pipe cutting tool (rented from autozone). I used an exhaust pipe expander (rented from autozone) to fit a few of the parts together since they were not perfectly round when they arrived.
I had oxygen sensors from NKG sitting on a shelf for the past few years that I had been planning on installing once I got a new exhaust system. They were about $22 each from Rock Auto. The price of those aren’t included in the $300 dollars I paid for the exhaust system. Most systems only come with the pipes though, and for $300 I got the band clamps, exhaust hanger, insulator, gasket and all of the pipes.

Well, it’s a nice muffler. It was close, almost a perfect fit.
The over all size is 25 1/2 inches long.
Muffler is 20 inches.
4 1/4″ thick x 9 3/4″ wide.
The in and out are 2 1/4 inches.
That’s where the problem lies.
The “original” tail pipe is 2 inches outside diameter.
There is no good way to make the muffler fit to the new tail pipe.
It said it was exact fit, but there is no way this is original fit.
My old muffler is 2 1/4 in and 2 1/16 out. The new tailpipe fit to the old muffler perfectly.
So I saved the old muffler, which wasn’t rusted too badly.
I would have known NOT to order this if ANYONE showed the diameter of these mufflers. But it’s really hard to figure out without that info, which is readily available on EVERY box label.
Why none of the auto parts stores or the various websites list this info is a mystery to me.

I installed this on my 96 Explorer with the 4.0l V6 and am uber-pleased with it. The 4.SLOW motor is not a performance engine, so I wasn’t expecting a bazillion horse power from a muffler swap. The muffler uses 2 1/4″ inlets and outlets, so my stock 2″ muffler tubing was replaced with 2 1/4″ by the muffler shop to match. Performance-wise, the motor feels more responsive and lively and less like it’s gasping for breath. The seat-of-the-pants dyno tells me that there is definitely more get-up-and-go throughout the entire powerband. I noticed that the engine powered up a few smaller hills on the highway that the car used to downshift for. I also gained (back) 2 or 3 MPG on the highway and about 1.5 MPG around town. The sound is nice and mellow – probably the quietest turbo muffler that I’ve heard – which helps keep the car from sounding like an annoying high schooler with glasspacks (oh, was that me back in the day?) and keeps in-cabin volume down to a very manageable level. Overall, it is slightly louder than stock, both inside and outside the vehicle, but not much more than road noise at speed. At 75 mph, it’s hardly noticeable, but not much more than my other car that simply has poor sound insulation from the factory. My explorer with aggressive all-terrain tires and the new exhaust is still quieter than my accord on the freeway. Also, there is minimal droning which is really only (barely) noticeable at 1800 rpm (that seems to be the case with this combination of muffler and engine). Overall, I’m super pleased with the muffler and would recommend to all who want a slight performance gain and better breathing setup without the obnoxious loudness of a loud exhaust.

Installed on Jeep Cherokee. Inlet size was fine but outlet size was too big for tailpipe. I had to adapt. FYI… check your pipe sizes. Overall, recommend this for the mellow rumble and better performance.
