I replaced the air filter in my car, from a different brand of paper filter, and I could tell immediately that this WIX filter has a tighter seal than the one I replaced and this WIX filter has more pleats, more filter media material… Not sure if I’m saying that right. Anyway quality of this filter far exceeds some other brands out there. AMSOIL partners with WIX, which is why I wanted to give it a try. I am impressed, good value too.

Bought for a 2017 Ford Explorer with the 3.5L. Appears to be at least as good as the OEM Ford air filter it was replacing and the fit was perfect. WIX has a great reputation and the online testing I’ve looked at says it flows slightly better than stock, but filters just as well. I use WIX air and oil filters in my other vehicles as well.

I pulled the original factory air filter from my 2014 Taurus SHO and compared it with a fresh/new FA-1884 (Motorcraft OEM replacement) and the Wix 46935, as well as a Fram CA10242. The Wix 46935 is almost a dead-ringer for the original factory air filter, but with a metal reinforcement mesh. The seal design, material, and pleat design is extremely similar. There are differences. The factory filter had about 102 pleats while the Wix has 99 pleats. The wire mesh on the Wix takes up an estimated 15.3 in2 of surface area, but the filter manufacturers claim there is no restriction from the mesh… yet they say the 46935 is good for engines under 4.0L of displacement. I contacted Wix and said this filter was intended for the 2007 Ford Edge with a N/A 3.5 making 260 hp, and is also used on the EcoBoost 3.5L V6 producing over 365 hp, which is easily tuned for nearly 500 hp.
The Motorcraft FA-1884 has less pleats (67) but each is thicker. The black seal material is also covered in a lot of oil, with a lot of oil soaked in the pleats as well. The Fram had a much cheaper feeling seal material. That said, the FA-1884 has a thicker wire mesh but more filter pleats exposed to the air inlet tube side of the airbox. The Wix and OEM factory filter had more of the seal material covering the pleats (about 1/4″ on each side). This is the clean side of the filter facing the inlet tube. After using the FA-1884 for about 2 months, the inside of my airbox and air intake tract is covered in oil… it’s far worse than a K&N.
The reason I did this research is because my SHO ran 12.6 in the 1/4 mile using the 3 year old dirty factory paper filter, and I wanted to replace it with something as similar as possible.

I recently installed this on my 2019 Ford Explorer Sport. The filter sits in the intake box nicely, however the rubber gasket is a bit thicker than my previous filter, so you really need to work hard to close the lid clips.
I have only read great things about these filters, so I am sure it will be a fine change for the car.
