3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Compound + Polish is moderately effective but very difficult to remove from a fiberglass boat hull with gelcoat.
3M advertises the Perfect-It Compound + Polish as “Stays Wet longer” and “Formula provides longer wet time for extended product life.” In my experience, the opposite is true. This compound is the most difficult to use marine product I have ever used on my boat because it dries too fast.
3M states that the product is effective for dark fiberglass. The product instructions recommend limiting the work area to a 2 x 2 square foot area. The instructions do not appear to provide air temperature ranges for its use nor do the instructions direct the user to moisten the applicator pad.
I applied 3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Compound + Polish directly to a black fiberglass boat hull that had both nominal and moderate oxidization. I used an orbital polisher to work the compound and I expected to use a separate orbital buffer to remove the material from the hull. The material dried onto the hull after just one pass with the polisher (I typically perform three passes). Perfect-It Gelcoat Compound + Polish would not come off the hull without herculean effort. It took 3 hours to incrementally work through a 20 square foot portion of the hull because I could not remove Perfect-It. Here are the adjustments I made in effort to evaluate how to remove the compound:
-Gradually worked smaller and smaller areas down to almost ¼ square foot
-Applied less compound and applied more compound
-Rushed the application process to transition to material removal faster
-Manually, and ultimately vigorously, rubbed the dry compound with both the smooth and rough sides of microfiber clothes and eventually tried using shop towels
-Moistened the applicator
-Worked only in the early morning or evening (always in shade).
-Applied water to wash off the compound (which was a mistake because the conditions worsened)
-Used another manufacturer’s marine polish to “rewet” Perfect-It to facilitate removal
The final removal process involved manually rubbing the Perfect-It with a shop towel, applying a different polish to the area to rewet residue, using a microfiber cloth to remove the newly applied polish and residue, and then buffing to remove the resulting streaks. I had to implement this process twice in several areas. Finally, I applied Meguiar’s M6332 Marine Wax to manage any remaining imperfections in the finish.
I didn’t expect trouble removing Perfect-It, and there were moments when I worried that the product might damage the hull’s finish (It didn’t). Its takes extraordinary effort and a lot of time to remove Perfect-It. In the end, Perfect-It removed only the nominal oxidation.
